Hi, just joining in here, kinda late.....Nitro had 6 doses of carboplatin, followed by about 10 months of metronomic therapy. He tolerated all pretty well, but ended up with cystits, which is a possible side-effect. From the cystitis (we presume) he developed incontinence, which we still battle off an on. But that's a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. Like Sally said, you have a plan, and that's a great thing. Good luck in deciding what is the right path for you.

Paula and Nitro

Nitro 11 1/2  yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms.  Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"

My Tungsten just had his amputation today and I checked in with a vet in the area that administers chemo to get an idea on their course of action.  They did not mention carbo specifically but did mention that they recommend 14 rounds....I left there dumbfounded.  Is there another chemo drug that requires more treatments?  Also, what is the average cost per round of carbo if you dont mind me asking?

Cheers,

Barb and Tungsten

Tungsten Blue, diagnosed with osteosarcoma August 2016, rear leg removed 28 October 2016, left us on 12/13/16, he will be greatly missed.

I posted my chemo costs on the what did it cost thread, but cannot find the thread now.  Hopefully someone more tech savvy can find it?

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

What kind of chemo? What is the protocol they will use?

Costs are based on many factors, including where you live, a dog's weight and the type of drug being given. Also, if a general practice vet does it, the cost will be lower than a specialty clinic with board-certified oncologists. Specialists charge more because they have more training and experience with cancer and chemo than GP vets.
