I personally haven't dealt with this with one of my pets, but one of our clients was in this exact situation.
The dog was an older black lab with a high grade soft tissue sarcoma that had an amputation done. She started up chemo as soon as she was healed from her surgery.
She really did relatively well but unfortunately her cancer did end up metastasizing to her sublumbar lymph nodes . She lived a little over 2 years from her diagnosis/amputation and had a good quality of life the whole time.
There are no wrong decisions here. We can only make the best decisions we can based on the information that we have. There are so many variables and it is overwhelming.
You might want to contact the University of CO for a second opinion on your treatment. They do this for free over the phone or email. http://csuvth.c.....lineforms/
It can take a few days for them to get back.
Something I always recommend to anyone with a pet facing cancer is to remove grains from the diet and look at Turkey Tail Mushroom supplements. There are lots of different ones out there but Turkey Tail has shown so much promise in studies lately, it really should be considered. K9 Immunity is one many of us use but there are others.
