Hi, I am new to tripawd, so let me introduce me and my fur baby. Winston is 7 yeras old and had a hip implant put in at 10 months. Recently the implant broke through his pelvis. Cancer was found, but undetermined type - undifferentiated. Since the initial diagnosis and three specialist, the consensus is a hemipelvictomy. Basically they will be removing the leg and 1/2 a pelvis. Some hamstring muscle will be used to cover the abdomen. All i want is my little man to be pain free for the preciuos time he has left. I don't expect cure anymore, but want to keep the spirit happy while he's here. Has anyone else had this surgery performed. A success story would be great right about now.
I am sorry to hear of Winston's dx. There are lots of tripawd forum members who are rear-leg amputees, some of them had hemipelvictomy. They definitely will be more than happy to share their stories with you. Sorry I am of no help here as Genie was a front-leg amputee.
Have you checked out Jerry's top 1-5, 6-10 frequently asked questions about bone cancer and amputation?
Please keep us posted on how Winston is doing and the surgery date. We'll all be praying for him.
Hugs.
Hi there! Thank you so much for joining us here. We are sorry you're going through this but we're betting Winston is just going to amaze you with his ability to bounce back! When is his surgery going to happen?
I was a front leg amp, so I don't have any experience there but hang tight, someone will be able to share their experience with this surgery.

Trouble is a front leg amp also, just wanted to welcome to the group. These dogs (and their owners) have amazing spirit and if anyone can keep you going on a positive note, these folks can.

Our wonderful friend Sandra posted some great advice about the hemipelvectomy operation here at Winston's most recent post.
