My name s Becky, My JoJo became a tripawd last Monday. She didn't have cancer, she was attacked by another dog the Wed before. They decided to take her leg on Monday 12/17/12. She came home on Wed and has started eating and walking around. She does have a drain that oozes all the time(Dr said it would) I am afraid her incision is not doing as good as it should. Of course with all the oozing it dries and looks worse. I soaked her yesterday an a warm bath and got a lot of the dried stuff off. But it seemed to get irritated... Should I just leave the dried goop or clean it and risk irritating the incision?

Can someone end me some pics of what it should look like??? As I said JoJo is eating, drinking, walking around and is on antibiotics... I just want her to be healthy also....Any advise will be glady taken....

Hi Becky and JoJo, thanks for joining, your future posts won't require approval.

I'm so sorry you went through such a traumatic situation, that's awful! But at least she's doing alright, and she'll be on the road to a complete recovery before you know it. Try not to panic. Many dogs have incision issues but they're usually very treatable. Has your vet seen the incision? Is there any way you can email a photo to them? Or post one here? It's hard to say what an incision "should" look like because all dogs are different, but in general here's what it shouldn't look like:

  • it shouldn't "ooze" any greenish or yellowish discharge.
  • it shouldn't stink or appear red and irritated looking

Here's a couple of blog posts that explain more tips.

Amputation Side Effects

I hope this helps. Please check in with your vet asap to make sure this doesn't get any worse.

HI Becky, I'm sorry JoJo got attacked by another dog. That's real sad that it's ending with an amputation. The good part of it is that they get used to it pretty fast. I have no advice to give you about the oozing. Jerry gave you pretty good indications. I hope things settles and that the incision heals as it should without anymore problems.

Welcome to Tripawds.  Not sure about the oozing as Sassy never had any problems with her inscision.  Jerry has given some pretty good links there.    I am sorry that JoJo got attacked by another dog.  That is a sad situation for your baby.

I hope JoJo continues to get along well.  Did the vet say anything about not getting the incision wet?  I know when Sassy had stitches we werent to give a bath or anything.

I don't know much about the incision problems. Have you consulted your vet?

My greyhound Socks became an amputee on the 10th of this month due to a spontaneous break of her shoulder. You will be amazed about how quickly they get on with their lives. You wouldn't know that Socks ever had four legs. She could run two days after her surgery, of course i wouldn't let her. I leash walked her until her stitches came out. I am sorry that she was attacked by another dog. I bet that was totally devastating. Please let us know how she is doing.
