Yeah, for me, I'm going g forward with her guard. Virginia very high risk for heartworm. Wish I ha a prove. alternative but I k ow of. o e.

That's a tough one, we battle the decision all the time even with our Wyatt Ray , who doesn't have cancer.
Our vet told us that if the risk factor in your region is high, if you travel lots together and are in the outdoors where the risk is high, then yes, please, do it. The risk of infection is too great. Since we fall into all of those categories, we use Heart Guard on Wyatt. For me, when I was battling cancer, we still did it. I ended up defying the odds and surviving 2 years and within those 2 years of traveling around, it would've been easy to contract heartworm. In both instances, we use plain old Heart Guard, with none of the other additives like flea/tick control.
But if a dog never leaves the house, if they are pretty much in the same environment all the time, than your risk level is lower. If so, then you have to weigh the pros and cons of not doing it.
Should you decide not to do it, holistic practitioners can guide you in the use of the holistic herb (?) black walnut, which is what I've been told is used in place of a traditional heartworm medication.

We do heartguard with Sassy and Bosch (who does not have cancer). I talked to my vet and she said yes to do it. We have a high risk in Iowa and its better to keep that risk down that to have her have heartworms and the treatment for that would definately hurt her more than the preventative.
We don't use any flea or tick preventative in that just straight Heartguard.
Like Jerry says definately check to see your risk areas.

Thanks everyone for your replies that has really helped..
In reply to a question about what direction we went with Tiffany. We did the chemo recommended by CSU. We only did four treatments, per their recommendation. We adjusted her to better nutrition and mushrooms that were recommended by a holistic vet. So far so good. Very happy active and knock on wood nothing to be concerned about.. We are only about 7 months post amp.. But personally every day I get with her is considered a gift to me.
