Yesterday Harley had surgery to debulk the tumor in his front limb.  The surgeon said the mass was the equivalent of two fists.  I brought him home this afternoon and he is clearly a lot more sore than the last two times this was done.  As his oncologist said, it will be interesting to see what the mass comes back as this time.  After the staples are out he will begin a different protocol, this time cytoxan and piroxocam (sp?)  I just shudder to think how many dogs have limb tumors that test out as benign when they are really malignant.

Harley is an 8 year old Golden Retriever. Amp surgery for an infiltrative lipoma canceled due to two masses in chest. A rescue, he found his forever home on 3/18/07 and left for his eternal home on 1/09/13. His story and medical history are at http://myharley.....pawds.com/

Like people, there are tumors that go undiagnosed.  We can never rationalize how something so tragic can happen whether it is pet or human.

Wishing Harley a super speedy recovery with the new treatment plan.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad you were able to make a decision that works for you both. Either way, you were in a tough spot, so I really truly hope that those nasty tumors don't return and Harley kicks cancer's butt for a very long time!

Please let us know how his recovery goes OK? Rest up and have a mellow weekend, you've both been through a lot.

Hang in there Harley! Hope he feels better soon.

We did cytoxan and Piroxicam with Abby and she tolerated that very well. Hopefully he will too,

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Hi there!

I hope Harley bounces back from his recent surgery soon!

We were just quoted a ton of money at WVRC for the metronomic meds you mention.

Are you thinking it's affordable?  How can we get the cost down?

Labby kisses from Hunter.

Our Super Dog Hunter crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on a beautiful summer day in July, just 3 days shy of his 10th Birthday. He gave us everything since he was 8 weeks old.  Hunter was a 14 month warrior of OS.  We LOVE and MISS him every day.
