Hello, Just wondering if anyone has any experience with Gabapentin for restlessness. Winslow had his surgery six days ago for cancer. He was experiencing restlessness before surgery at night only, now that he is on Tramadol he is constantly panting and pacing. I have tried everything from reducing and even stopping the Tramadol, however I am sure he must be having some post op pain. He is not yelping out in pain, and I am not suspecting phantom pain . Just desperate for something to stop this horrible restlessness. I know the first two weeks are the hardest, but this guy is not getting any rest. I am getting desperate and questioning our decision to proceed with the surgery. Thank You!

Hopefully one of our vet experts will offer a professional opinion for you. Tramadol can certainly cause restlessness, but so can pain, so these issues can get frustrating for sure. Thanks for asking, and best wishes for Winslow's speedy recovery.

Not sure about the Gabapentin.. It made our Bo very dopey/mopey/lethargic. Bo did have restless times though and for that we did some ice "therapy". Use an ice pack covered with a towel on and around the incision site for 10-15 minutes, 3 times a day. We usually did this around med time and we all found it comforting and relaxing.

Oh boy I can relate to that. I HATE Tramadol. I would rather deal with some pain than that dope!
Ok, here's the thing; I don't know if gaba can be used in that manner, but I do know there are lots of good anti-anxiety drugs on the market (haha, I'm a nervous nellie so my folks have lots of experience with them!). Call your vet and ask for some, they will help. I know it kinda feels weird to give your dog so many drugs right now but it's only temporary.
Hang in there. All pawrents question this big scary decision, but in the end, things DO get better I promise.
