I wanted to give you an 11 week update on Frazier, our 12 year old Miniature Schnauzer. Just to quickly recap, Frazier was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his right rear leg on August 10, 2012. We made to decision to have that leg amputated, so on August 14th, he joined the elite group of Tripawds.  After an overnight stay at the animal hospital, he returned home to rehab and adjust to his “new life”.

His adjustment period was extraordinary with no issues and we returned to the vet 2 weeks later to begin his carboplatin chemo treatments.

Last Thursday Frazier completed his 4th of 6 scheduled treatments and received his first x-ray since the initial diagnosis. The result was NEGATIVE for lung mets! Hooray!!

We feel so blessed that everything has gone so well for us to this point.

OH my gosh it's WONDERFUL to hear from you! As a senior pup, it's so important to have these kinds of updates so pawrents of mature dawgs can hear that there IS hope after a diagnosis. Congratulations to you Frazier!

What does your rehab routine consist of? Just curious.

Yay Frazier!  Extraordinary recovery and clean x-rays is a lot to celebrate.  Congratulations!

Lisa and Angel Zeus

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Big thanks to everyone for your kind comments. We feel as if Frazier has been given a second chance at life, so we take every opportunity to make it the best we can.

As far as a rehab routine, it was nothing overly complex.  Knowing that his surgery was traumatic for him, I tried to reestablish his "normal" as best I could, such as keeping his favorite toys nearby. Most importantly, getting him walking and learning to balance on 3 legs was paramount. We started with short walks, nothing more than a block. Every couple of days, I extended Frazier's exercise an additional block, but not to exceed 15 minutes. This routine lasted for 2 weeks. Now we go 30-40 minutes with no problem.

Also I periodically massage his rear leg plus his amputated region to improve blood circulation.

After 11 weeks since Frazier became a tripawd, he's like his "old self"!

Thank you for including that description. Even though what you did seems like a no-brainer to you, it's good to see what folks are doing so that new pawrents can see there are simple things anyone can do to make a new Tripawd's life easier.

Go Frazier!

What a great update! Clear xrays is the best news possible!

Treats for everyone to celebrate!

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman.
