Unfortunately my Hobo now has mets in this lungs, we found them before doing his 4th and final round of Carboplatin. I am taking him today for the first of his doxorubicin treatments. I have found some research about giving fish oil to help battle mets but can't seem to find anything about what dosage to give him? He is around 49lbs. Also wondering if anyone has any other suggestions? I am still not ready to let this cancer take him without a fight!

This sounds like Sassy.  Although we were giving fish oil the whole time.  But our vet discontinued IV chemo and we started on a metronomics protocol.  We have been doing that since the diagnosis on March 1st.  I guess we started about 11 of march.  She is still doing great.  We have one met that continues to grow but all the rest of them are holding steady.

I'm really sorry to hear this, but like you said, don't give up hope that the mets can stabilize. It happens! Many Triapwds who have have been diagnosed with mets have lived excellent lives far beyond what the statistics predict.

My biggest suggestion is to ask your vet about metronomic chemotherapy , an at-home chemo treatment which is relatively inexpensive and has helped many dogs with mets (including me!). As for Fish Oil dosages, check out this Tripawds Nutrition blog post:

Awwww Sweet Hobo? You are a strong boy and have no intention of going anywhere soon!!

Soooooo many people will chime in with their experience with metronomic. Sassy is hanging tough. Kerry of course had metro and lived large for years!

Tons of info. On the site on supplements, nutrition and met ron., etc

I think the omega 3 is roughly 1,000 mg. per lb. I use three capsules and then a half can of sardines a day......my Happy Hannah's around 115 lb. And just could of tolerate all those pills....plus size girls don't come cheap when it comes to this crap:-) :-)

I really think once you get a plan and do the research on your options, you will feel more empowered!

Just remember, Hobo isn't interested in time frames or any ole' stupid disease.......he's just LOVING LIFE ad loving being spoiled by you!! Try and stay in the moment.....the great learning lesson tripawd folks have to face.....dogs.....they have that one mastered:-) :-)

And, I do believe so etching that would help beautify this site today is........ta sum......more pictures of HOBO:-) :-) We need photos of that sweet boy!!

I'll be on the look out.........

Sending you love, strength and calm,

Sally and Happy Hannh

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Dr. D (Dog Cancer Survival Guide ) recommends 6,000 - 9,000 mg of fish oil for a dogs weighing 35-60lbs.  We use liquid fish oil for Libby.

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14

As a tag along question, since I was just reading Dr. D's bits on this this a.m. - does anyone have any insight whether fish oil chews are an acceptable substitute to fish oil?  I bought these a couple of weeks ago, and the dogs (both the tripawd and her quadpawd brother) LOVE them.  Omega 3 Fish Oil for Dogs - 120 Count Bucket

Thanks everyone! We have talked to the oncologist about metronomics and we will start them after a few rounds of this chemo depending on how he does and if we see any growth. We are planning to do xrays often to stay on top of it! I will go ahead and start him on fish oil too! Thank you again!
