Some people asked me to let others know about our experience with morphine epidural. Our dog, Sasha, came home with a 8"x8" yellow patch on her back. This covers a catheter that goes into her spine. It has a port that is used to inject the morphine. They gave us some antiseptic swabs to clean the port before injecting it. It is hard to depress the syringe's plunger at first, but it gets easier as you go. After her last injection, I have to remove the epidural by peeling back the patch. It all comes out on its own, hopefully. We just had to give her 4 injections and then she continues on with Tramadol.

Oh wow, you guys are incredible pawrents, and Sasha is a lucky girl.
I didn't know this kind of pain management option was available. Thanks for posting this information. Now we know, and I'm sure somepawdy will be looking for it someday.

I removed the epidural a little while ago. It was a good thing she's on painkillers, because a lot of hair came with the patch. It was also disconcerting to see 4" of the catheter come out of her back, but it all went smoothly. No problems ans Sasha is already walking around with just a little assistance.

We have a surgeon here who always does these on any rear limb surgery but I have never heard of anyone keeping it in for owners to deal with. I'm sure that it helped her out!

Wow, I'm glad that Sasha is doing well and you were able to get the epidural removed without fainting on your part or Sasha's!
Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.

Amazing! I would have lost my breakfast at the thought, you are a wonderful puppy parent! I can't even handle watching my dog get his nails done, so that would've been way beyond me :0)
