I'm new to tripawds.  My dog had his back leg amputated due to bone cancer. We our on day 3 of post amputation. He has finally pooped.  He is eating good.  But he won't drink or pee.  Only drank a little since he has been home.. Had to take him to emergency care to have him drained yesterday.  Any ideas on how to get him to drink.

Hi Brodie & Family, welcome. Glad you joined us, we'll help you as much as we can. Keep in mind it's still very early, and it's REALLY a great sign that he pooped and is eating! Wow! OK, so celebrate that, and then focus on encouraging him to drink. Ideas we share around here include adding:

  • Low-sodium chicken or beef broth to water (or see this yummy Honest Kitchen broth)
  • Water from a can of tuna fish
  • Ice cubes
  • Watering down the food he will eat with as much water as possible (think: stew!)

Others will have some ideas to share so stay tuned!

Oddly enough, my Happy Hannah didn't want to drink either! Eating? No problem! NEVER missed a meal!

Here's what worked for me. Ice cream!''Yep, a scoop of ice cream swirled around in her water. There was a little "technique" to it though. I woukd get her licking it off a big spoon first. Then lower the spoon I to the water as she was licking. Be sure and leave some chunks of ice cream in the water.

Good for you for staying on top of the peeing situation. Is Brodie able to go to his favorite pee spots? Is it possible to have another dog co ee over a dd pee on o ee of his spots? I know, crazy stuff, but recovery requires crazy stuff sometimes!

And YAY for poop!!!poopicon_png

Keep us posted and wpukd love to see pics!

Hugs!

I remember that another member drove his dog to the vets after hours, knowing that all of the scents there would encourage the dog to pee.  I wonder if he might also be having balance issues - my Otis started by leaning up against (and peeing on) the house so he could kind of lift his leg.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Sorry to hear about your boy. We use a lot of water mixed with oue dogs food but they get food twice a day and bowls are not left out so they eat it all at once. Ive heard that a baby formula liquid replacement , cant remember the name , is suposed to taste good to dogs. watch out for high sugar and carbs though.

dogs are pertty bright , maybe he has an issue with his bladder or kidneys and it hurts to pee or have a full bladder. our other dog had a bladder infection a few years ago when we noticed he was not intrested in drinking much water.

Best thoughts towards you and your dog...

Good job Brodie!  He was probably just having a hard time figuring out how with the incision and meds.  Glad he is back on track.
