Well my little girl had her front leg off on Tuesday. Ive been reading all about the phantom pain and im getting a bit concerned about it even though she dosnt seem to be experiancing it, will it come or wouldshe be experiancing it by niw if she was going to.
Shes been a bit quiet today sleeping allot, which i suppose is to be expected. I cant wait for her to get the sparkle back, its really upsetting with what shes been through in her life already.
Am i worrying about nothing ? do i need to get any medication in, just in case, i couldnt bear to hear her screaming out again like she did Tuesday night, it was just heart wrenching for me, to see her like this and not be able to help her.
She is on 2 antibiotic tablets a day and 2 pain killers a day and she seems to be fine with this, i think the pain killers are previcox, is this ok ? do i need anything else ?

Aww try not to worry. Phantom pain is common but not that common. I don't know if that helps but trust me you will know if she is experiencing it. What pain medications is she on right now?
Previcox is not a pain killer but rather an anti-inflammatory. It is good but generally not enough, most vets will also prescribe something like Tramadol or Gabapentin along with it (Gaba is also good for preventing phantom pain ). Remember, you want to stay ahead of the pain, not try to eliminate it once it starts, it's so much easier that way).
Quiet is good, that means she's healing. Keep an eye on her, if you notice any kind of whining, panting or pacing, then it's time to call your vet to let them know. {{{hugs}}}

I thought previcox was an anti inflamatory/pain killer
must be doing somthing because thats all shes had and she hasnt experianced any pain what so ever, shes really bright today and has actually started talking to me again, im thrilled at how shes doing. I will however mention it to my vet.
I do have some tramadol, he said to give then to her after the 5 day corse of previcox.
She has been through 2 major and one minor opperations over the past few months and has always coped well after.
praying things carry on going in this direction

Owwwweee! Yeah, double check with the vet about adding Tramadol and/or Gabapentin to the mix! This is MAJOR surgery and dogs are very stoic at trying to hide their pain. Most all amputees here are on those pain meds in some dos or another for about two weeks! I hope the vets who don't prescribe pai meds never have to go through major surgery without their surgeon giving them strong pain killers!! Dogs seem to be able to recover a little faster when they aren't battling pain too. Okay....off my soapbox! And I'm certainly no vet!
I may have missed it, how old is your beautiful girl? What were her previous surgeries for? Why had she been used to walking around on three legs prior to this? Just curious. We love hearing about all our new family members!

Extra treats for that sweet girl! Would love to see some photos when you can. Saw on the other post she slept in the bed with you last night! Is that the best feeling in the world? OMD! I love sleeping with my dog!!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
I will add the video of her, i trust my vet 110 per cent, he has been amazing and trust me if my dog was in pain id know about it, i love this dog with all my heart and i wouldnt let her suffer, she is amaZing and has been to hell and back.
I will keep an eye on her though, thanks for the advise hun, really appriciate it x
since the video, she had the frame taken off her leg and all was well for a while. the leg started to form a false joint and she had to have another opperation to remove the bad bone and to lenghten the leg at the same time, this was done in June this year, unfortunalty this didnt work due to the bone totally dieing off from the wrist down, the infection was so bad whilst she was in Greece and did too much damage to the bone.
We did all we could to save the leg but it wanst meant to be, shes bounced back every time and has been a real fighter.
Next year i am going to take her to the beach for a nice holiday, shes more than deserved it

Wow, what a fabulous story - all those kind people in Greece. This warms my heart. Is she now with you permanently in England?
What a trooper and such a happy dog! My kitty Mona had her amputation in June and would start going nutty when it was time for her medication so perhaps the pain was starting up again then. She was on Buprenorphine and a pain killer / anti-inflammatory. Obviously you know your dog well and will know when to get other pain meds. I think Mona experienced phantom pain just a couple of times that I witnessed. It was about 10 days after the pain meds. She'd be laying down, let out a growl, leap up and run. This was about 3 weeks after her surgery but it stopped after a week.
All the best to you and that amazing dog who truly loves life. Is he bi-lingual?

When i first saw the video of her on FB when she was found in such a state, i pleaded with the Greek guy to go back and get her. I knew stright away that i would have her, god only knows how the hell id ever pull it off and get her to the UK, my family thought i was raving..lol
It was obviously meant to be, she is mine for keeps x
