Hi,

Bear is a 1 yr old Husky-BorderCollie-AusShepherd mix) and is 3 days post surgery (rear leg).

Her incision looks good. Her appetite is ok and she is eating her meals. But she is not thirsty. She drank nothing the first two days home, and finally had a little drink today (just once).

Every day so far I have taken her outside a few times to pee. She has yet to pee outside. On day 1 (the day she arrived home) she peed once while sleeping. Yesterday (day 2) she peed 3 times during her sleep. Today, no pee so far (not while sleeping and not outside unless she peed on the grass while sitting but it didn’t look like she assumed the position).

Her vet is not too concerned because she is eating, but are there any tricks to get a dog to drink, and to pee outside instead of during her sleep? She is also pretty out of it. When I take her outside she mostly just sits there staring at nothing, or me, or desperately trying to lick her incision through the cone. I know we are only 3 days out, but it is heartbreaking to see her like this.

Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

Sounds like she is doing pretty well so far but maybe she has too much pain medication?  What is she taking now?  You definitely want her to be comfortable, it makes recovery so much easier so it's good you don't seem concerned about her pain levels.  Talk with your vet about what you are seeing and see if maybe changing the dose or dosing schedule might help her be a little more 'with it' but still manages her pain.

As far as water- you might try adding some low sodium chicken or beef broth to her water, sometimes tuna water works.  I have a Pug boy who rarely drinks water so I add liquid to each of his meals.

Why did she need an amputation?

Hang in there!  This is the hardest part of recovery,  but it does get better, sloooowly but surely!

Ditto Karen about talking g to your Vet about possibly  reducing g the doses of the pain meds.  Sounds like she may be a bit too loopy and that's  why she's peeing in bed and sort of out of it.

My Happy Hannah, for whatever reason, also didn't  wa t to drink water.  She ate just fine.   I actually would swirlma spoonful of ice cream in her water.

Update when you can and hopefully adjusting  the meds (with Vet approval) may  make a difference.  If she really jas not had water for the first two days, and now just a tiny bit, you can talk with the Vet to make sure she doe get dehydrated and needs fluids.

Hugs
