We met with our vet and came up with a plan for Polly. But its freaking me out. I dont want to pump her full a ton of stuff unless i really have to.
This is the list of my vets plan. If anyone has ever used any of these, can you tell me your experiences? I have been doing reading in a few different cancer books, and i am just so overwhelmed.
1. Diet of high protein and lower carb. 70/30
2. Cyclophosphamide
3. Carprofen
4. Doxycycline
5. Bone Statis supplement
6. Canine Whole Body support supplement.

These three are common components of metronomic chemotherapy – low dose oral chemo, antibiotic, and an NSAID. search these forums and the blogs for the brand name "Cytoxan" to find additional relevant forum topics and blog posts.

My dog has been on Cyclophosphamide for over a year. He's responded quite well to it. No side effects whatsoever. His tumor growth has slowed and hasn't changed too much. The first issue we have had is that his white blood cell count came back low during our last checkup so he's taking a break from it. But he has been on it the whole year and we went in for routine checkups every 6-8 weeks. Blood work always came back good. Hope that helps.

I did try the cyclophosphamide chemo but my dog Tazzie had a bad bladder infection after a few months so I stopped (she was prone to these prior to chemo).
I used the artemisinin after that. I had tried the Bone Stasis powder (a Chinese herb) for a few months after amputation but I also stopped that because she hated it!

Suki is on it right now and, like the above poster, I've had to watch her w/ bladder infections (again, prone to them before she was on chemo), but other than that she's tolereated it very well.
I, too, was nervous about every other day chemo ("so many nasty chemicals!"), but, as always, she doesn't seem to mind at all and my fears have been largely for nothing.
I do make sure to take her out to pee no more than every three hours though on chemo days
Thanks guys! i've been nervous to give this to her. I just want to do whats best for her. I worry that doing this will speed up the cancer or make her immune system too weak and it will just take over. This is my first time dealing with cancer in any aspect and it is terrifying!

I found this helpful, as Jackson's onco is suggesting we start metronomics at his third IV chemo (carbo) appt. She's recommending Cyclophosphamide (=Cytoxan). I got this info via an email estimate and I have questions for her. But, it appears the Rx is for 10mg per day (58lb dog). I thought it was an every other day thing? As a boy dog, I'm thinking the risk of bladder infections are lower?
ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!

Lately, many oncologists are recommending that dogs take it every day, but yes, girldogs tend to have a higher risk of getting bladder infections from it so oftentimes it's still prescribed every other day for them, but boy dogs can get it every day as long as they can tolerate it.
Try not to worry. Yes it's chemo but it is so low dose, dogs don't glow in the dark when they're on it, I promise! It's a very low-key way to mange cancer and hopefully keep it from being bad.
