Hello, we have an appointment on monday to see a dr. who works with crotoxin.
Has anybody had experience with this kind of treatment, side effects and so on?
Thank you for any comments.

That's a new one to me! I searched the forums and couldn't find any mention of Crotoxin. So thank you for starting this topic! The only information I found online is very clinical and scientific. Hopefully others with chime in... If you do not hear from Tazziedog, consider re-posting your question in the Ask A Vet forum for her professional opinion.

From what I found, crotoxin is from the venom of rattlesnakes and has been shown to reduce tumors and pain.  Sounds pretty promising!!

Here are the conclusions to a study I found online:

CONCLUSIONS

Considering the results obtained using crotoxin complex for treating advanced cancer patients, the following conclusions can be formulated:

a. That cytotoxic action is related to the preferential disassociation of the crotoxin complex thus allowing the interaction of crotoxin B with the membranes of tumoral cells.

b. That crotoxin is active in several types of cancer metastases.

c. That no serious acute toxic effects are produced and no toxic effects either sub-acute or chronically accumulative are observed.

d. That, at therapeutic dosages, secondary or collateral effects are scarce and disappear 4 to 6 hours after administration.

e. That crotoxin does not require binding to plasma proteins for transport.

f. That therapeutic effect does not depend on a high plasma level.

g. That there is no accumulation in any organ.

h. That no toxicity which should be attributed to tumoral lysis, including but not limited to, hyperuricemia and/or hypercalcemia, has been observed.

i. That there are no contraindications.

j. That, according no clinical experiences with patients receiving several treatments, the crotoxin complex does not interact with other anti-tumor agents.

k. That crotoxin complex exhibits a large analgesic effect.

l. That crotoxin complex is poorly antigenic in either animals and humans.

m. That the final metabolites of the crotoxin complex integrate the amino acid pool.

n. That no psycho-organic dependency has been detected.

o. That administration is daily, does not require special technique or application procedure, and can be carried out in ambulatory conditions.

So how many of these treatments, exactly, is little Jack getting: let's see IP6, rattlesnake venom, regular old-fashioned chemo, . . . . . . . . I guess Jack is the one dog in the world who can handle this all at once!!

There are too darn many papers out there flagging drugs that are "known" to kill tumours! What is a dog with OSA to do???

Horacia- let us know what your snake doctor says.

ha, I've stopped commenting when people have questions about reactions, because Jack pretty much has none.  He did get all hyper on the inositol at first, but now he's back to normal.  Jack isn't on crotoxin, but I'd like him to be!  Poor little guy 🙂

Wufff-Wuff, this is great, so many replies! Thanks Idillon for making an exerpt. I have read so many things (but in spanish and translating them would have taken me lots of time!)

I am very anxious to get there and to start treatment...

Field studies say it really does work on many kinds of cancer cells, so my hopes are up. We all know that we would do anything just for a couple of more days with our sweeties!

Kim, you should take Tika on vacation down here, we have plenty of rattlesnakes to offer... my Hori just runs when she sees one (Ok, she runs when she sees anything that is not people or dogs!) Kind of Scooby-Dooish!

I love the idea that we are actually trying snake oil and who knows - snake oil might work afterall! Maybe there was truth behind the myth all these centuries!

Horacia - are you doing regular old chemo?

Unfortunately chemo is not an option here in Córdoba, maybe in the capital Buenos Aires I could get it, but not here... we don't even have dog oncologists! As much as I love this country, sometimes i wish I was in a more developed one!

Oh, beware, I hope Hori doesn't get venomous!

Doggy oncologists are not all that common even here - it is not as though you can find a few in the yellow pages, ha. A few did crop up in Alberta during the last 5-10 years and that was where I was this summer, but as yet there are none in Winnipeg, where I am for the winter. But the vet we met this morning has done chemo, specifically with Adriamycin which scares me a bit (the heart issues it brings). She had not heard about metronomics but was willing to read and find out.

Awesome information, thank you! Is the study you found the same one that you embedded links to in your post?

The links were already there (I can add links, but I don't know how to get rid of them!!).  It looks like the same study...There was a ton of information but, like you'd said before, most of it is reaaallllyyyy scientific.  This was like, the most understandable stuff I could find 🙂

The links were bad though, so we removed them. They were not absolute ... they were coded as internal links, missing the domain. Might load faster, but won't work when pasted elsewhere.
