Hi all....Odin is day 17 post surgery already....time flies!!!! He is doing well!!! He had his first chemo session Friday with Doxorubicin. His taste buds seemed to have changed. He loved chicken now refuses. He like chopped meat and chicken livers. Has anyone else experienced this changing of taste buds?
Search these forums and you'll find many topics with members discussing how their dog's appetite was affected by chemotherapy. Hopefully others can provide more specific feedback for you.

Could it be the bowl? I've heard that chemo makes a metallic taste in the mouth, and I remember reading that some folks don't use stainless steel bowls during chemo because of that. If he's already eating out of a ceramic bowl, I guess that's not the answer!
Our pup only wanted very plain foods after chemo treatments, but her appetite was usually normal again by a day or two after.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Do you mean Odin will not eat Chicken but will eat other stuff, or he won't eat anything? It sounds like he will eat things he didn't eat before?
I did not have many issues with Maggie when she did her chemo, just some nausea a couple of times. She was on a different regimen for mast cell cancer. I do know that a lack of appetite would make her not eat her favorite (chicken for her too) but then she would eat turkey. Or if I got her to eat a little cheese first she would eat her regular food that she had just rejected. Her lack of appetite stage was not due to chemo but another health issue, but I would guess the result is the same.
Odin may be a little off after the chemo and not feel like eating the normal stuff. What I learned with Maggie was not to force it- if I got upset because she wouldn't eat that would make her more reluctant to eat. I had to make sure I didn't use scented soap or lotion on my hands before I tried to feed her or touch her food. And sometimes using a starter would work- if she rejected her food bowl I would give her some cheese (I don't know why that almost always worked) then she would eat some of her food.
You might consider also keeping a log or diary of Odin's eating habits, meds and chemo and see if there are any patterns.

Hi....thanks for the responses. First I somehow logged out and forget my username. My attempts to use the site to retrieve it have failed....may be a glitch.
Sorry for the typing errors before. Odin will not eat chicken anymore. I cooked up chopped meat and chicken livers and he ate like normal. Weired how he absolutely won't eat chicken as it used to be his favorite. He ate the meat out of stainless steel so that's not the issue but something I will monitor.
I keep a daily log of everything. I have done so since his surgery 17 days ago. I suggest everyone to do it.
Thank you so much for responding and I hope to recover my user name and password shortly.

Great idea! This is exactly why we created the Tripawds Blogs, for users to share their experiences and help others. It's also why have Tripawds Journals in the gift shop.
