I am way worried about chemo tomorrow. I am planning on doing the 6 treatments of Carboplatin. Any advice on pre and post chemo treatments?

He's doing so well right now and I don't want to screw it up, but I also want him to have the best treatment possible. I know many of you opted to not do chemo. Anybody do the Carboplatin and have a good experience with it?

Thanks guys. My nerves have the best of me right now. embarassed

Trouble had 5 treatments of carboplatin.  Her side effects were very mild, within 12 hours (except for one treatment) she was recovered.  Her blood counts stayed good, there were no delayed treatments.  Ask for an anti-nausea medication, she did have mild vomiting about 6 hours after treatments - a couple of small gaks, nothing major.  I bought puppy pads and put them under her when she'd start to get sick.  I didn't want her to think she needed to make it outside. I think before the third treatment she had an injection for nausea before the treatment, but I really couldn't tell much difference. She had chills after a couple treatments and I'd wrap her in a blanket or towel and hold her for body heat until it stopped - just a few minutes, again, nothing major.

Dr F and Bob had to convince me to do the chemo.  They both told me if it was too hard on her, we could stop treatment at any time.  Hopefully, you and Charlie will have a relatively easy time also.  We'll be sending good thoughts your way.

Good luck.  If I had it to do over I would do six treatments of just carboplatin.  Sounds like a good plan to me.

Good luck, Charlie.

Catie really didn't have any measurable side effects to the carboplatin beyond some loss of appetite, some lethargy. Her treatment protocol called for alternating chemo of carboplatin and doxorubicin. The doxo was another story. That's a nasty therapy.

Got our fingers and paws crossed that Charlie sails through his first treatment tomorrow.

Best wishes to Charlie!

Holly had 6 rounds of Carboplatin.  She had an injection of cerenia (I'm not sure of the spelling) before each - that's an anti-nausea drug.  The first treatment was fine, but she did lose her appetite and have nausea after all the other treatments.  I'd ask for an anti-nausea prescription to take home - it took us until the 4th treatment to get one from our vet, and it did make a difference for Holly. The anti-nausea med she was metoclopramide (again, I'm not sure that's the correct spelling), and she also took pepcid ac.  Her white blood cell counts did go down and 2 of her treatments were delayed a week, but other than that she did fine.

Good luck, and just remember what Trouble said - you can always stop if Charlie doesn't appear to be handling it well.

Hugs,
Holly, Zuzu and Susan

Tazzie had 5 injections of carboplatin and did not require any meds for nausea.  She had some mild diarrhea that responded well to probiotics and had decreased appetite for a day or 2.

Hey Charlie, good luck! As you can see, most dogs don't have issues with it. And 6 rounds of carbo is now the gold standard, so you're set.

I didn't have chemo so I was unfamiliar with the experience. But when we sat in on this chemo session, we were so surprised at how easy and quick it was. I know yours will be too!
