Does anyone know if there's a weaning period for tri's to get them off of the drug.  Trying to prepare Bailey for a steroid. I know you have to wait 3 or 4 days prior but was wondering if it's a gradual weaning off the carprofen.

There is no weaning off period.  You do have to stop completely and do the wash out period before the steriod can be given

I don't think you need to taper off carprofen (rimadyl).  It is an anti-inflam and you should just be able to stop giving it. Tani has been on it for years and I have had to stop a couple times to deal with other health issues and she hasn't had any problems.

You should post in the 'Ask a Vet' forum to get Dr. Pam's take on it as I am not a vet. You could also call your vet.

OK good.  I was concerned about going cold turkey and putting her in more pain.  They did say I may have to give her codeine if we notice a big change and she's in pain.

She's on Gabapentin also and I know you can't just stop that.  We have her on 1/2 twice daily on that.  So cold turkey on the Carbo tonight.

I am scared about screwing something up.  I know we have to wait on the steroids.

Yeah, agree with everyone else but also double check with vet!! Disclaimer ...no vets are we!!!

DEFINITELY must wait about four days after last dose of Carprofen.....again, check with vet...before giving Bailey the steroid. Vet may even say five days...or may say less...so be sure and check with vet. Geez, I think I'm being a little repetitive about "checking with the vet"!

I also have stopped a dog cold turkey off of Carprofen ,(Rimadyl) with zero problems.

So, did you show that article to Dr. Snodgrass and is she suggesting going ahead with Prednisone??

Hoping it makes a difference!

Just write everything down....so today is day one off........Saturday would be four full days off and IF....IF....IF... vet said keep her off four days , then you could start steroid on Sunday.....
Glad she's still on Gabapentin to keep any potential under control. And as the vet said, you could still add the Coedine back into the mix if necessary.

Just keep notes....any questions, call the vet...you aren't gonna screw up, okay?
