Hi Snoopy and D 🌺
My girl Eurydice did 6 sessions of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy and 3 sessions of doxorubicin.
She took Cerenia the day of chemo and the following 3 days.
Zero side effects beginning to end.
We discovered lung mets (she had a scan) 7 months after amputation but she showed no symptoms until much later.
The only symptoms which eventually showed up were less energy and much, much later somewhat laboured breathing.
You are being a GREAT Mom for Snoopy and are pursuing great treatment options.
As others said, chemo offers no guarantees, we've seen dogs here living long lives with or without chemo but for me, personally, I followed the chemo route as I wanted to fight actively and felt my baby's chances were better with chemo (for whatever is worth)
No matter where your journey will take you the most important thing is to enjoy your days together, celebrate each day and spoil your boy rotten 💓
We are all by your side but, of course, need pictures, lots of pictures !

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)
Hello All! Thanks for your stories shared. All your kindness is heartwarming. I’ve never been one who believed in statistics. I don’t know why I can’t get the dreadful time frames the doctors gave statistically out of my head. Snoopy had a great day! Everyday he makes me so proud. Just noticed I guess this might’ve been the wrong section to post in. If I’m posting more or updates would I come back to this forum post, start new, or maybe I do need a blog? Do you guys have blogs? I’d love to see them. And yes a learning curve for sure, please bare with me...

I do not think you are posting in the wrong forum, you could post in "hopping around" if you would like. You can find many of our blogs HERE You will see a list on the right side of the page that contains recent blogs, and recent forum posts. There is also a search bar for you to look for blogs. People can follow you easier in the forums, but it is great to share your experience in a blog too. Mine is still in the works. I work on getting it updated as I have time. Huckleberry's story In forum land, you can subscribe to peoples forums and get an email when there is a new post. That is what I mean by easier to keep in touch. You have to look a little harder ( or I am still too green, lol) to find blog posts.
Once you sign up for a blog, then you can post pictures! You don't have to create the blog right away, but it gives you a dashboard with a media library. that is where you can upload your pictures to and post them from on to your forum. I know, clear as mud, right? Once you are there it is not so hard, and once you post a few pictures it gets easier.
In the forums you will find one forum for technical support. If you browse through the topics you will find answers to the most common questions. If you don't find your answer you can start a post and ask your question there. You will see a lot of people have a link on their signature when they post to your forum. That is a great way to see peoples blogs. I have not attached mine yet but many have.
I cannot wait to see more PICTURES!!

Hello hope all are well! Nov 21 Snoopy had blood work before his first carboplatin treatment. Today Nov 28 he had his one week follow up blood test. On the outside he’s doing so amazing but his blood test showed two things have significantly increased, his creatinine level is almost high and his urea (bun) level is high. I’m quite concerned since the doctor advised carboplatin can cause this. The doctor was supposed to call me today with the results and never did. I ended up calling and asked them to email me the results. Im thinking maybe he wasn’t concerned so he didn’t feel like I needed to be advised (kinda like human doctors). I’m going to call tomorrow to discuss with him. However as the night goes on my brain continues wandering. Could the carboplatin be causing this? Will he be able to continue on carboplatin? Would this be too risky for the health of his kidneys? Or maybe he’s been getting to much protein? I was thinking maybe I should lower his protein intake and rebook another blood test in a weeks time. If the creatinine and urea (bun) levels have lowered, maybe this would confirm it was a dietary cause? Or would this be lower because more time has gone since he had carboplatin? If anyone has any insight I’d be very thankful to hear.

Okay, deep breath! I do know sometimes there is a drop in WBC and Carbo has to be delayed. We've probably had some here where kidney values were effected, I just can't remember. Plus, I doubt that it happened after just o e treatment, but I can't be sure. There is a strong likelihood that there is no connection whatsoever!
Sorry I'm no help! But yeah, I doubt this is anything to be too concerned abput. If it is chemo related, maybe a lower dose, or maybe every four weeks I stead of three. Just throwing sruff out there vut with no real basis!
The Vet will guide you and uncover the cause. I realky, really dony think it's anything to be too concerned about.
So just TRY not to worry and try not to jump ahead..........and stay off Dr Google!

I don't know if this will help or not.
When Rocky began chemo, we were presented with either Carboplatin or Doxorubicin. Rocky had heartworm when I first got him, so we decided the Doxo may not the best idea since it can be hard on the heart.
He was scheduled for six rounds of Carbo, but only had five because his cancer started spreading before we could finish the protocol. His was a strange case. His lungs were fine, but his osteosarcoma started popping up as tumors along his side. And it eventually made its way into one of his back legs (he was a front-legged tripawd).
He breezed through his first three treatments. We had to go every four weeks for his last couple of treatments due to low neutrophils counts, but otherwise he handled it just fine.
David and Rocky (and Baxter now too!)
Rocky had his right front leg amputated on Valentine's Day 2017 after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma.
He joined the September Saints on September 3, 2017.
He is the toughest, bravest, sweetest and best friend I'll ever know.
Thank you David, I appreciate your help and very sorry for your loss of Rocky. I hope you don’t mind my asking... we’re Rocky’s tumors on his side and back leg showing externally or they were internal tumors? Was the back leg tumor similar to osteosarcoma seen during diagnosis? And I seen your post, Congratulations on your new addition to your family!

He had two tumors on his right side that you could see/feel. We were hopeful they were just fatty tumors, but an aspirate showed OSA. He had a third one that had just started to grow on his left side that was the same. There was also one hidden in a muscle in his rear right leg that showed up on an ultra sound. And we didn't know about the one in his rear left leg until X-rays after the leg broke. So he was pretty riddled with cancer by the end. The initial diagnosis was on his front right leg, which is the leg that was ultimately amputated.
His case was pretty unusual though. Hoping and praying you all have better fortune.

You are being a great advocate by asking good questions and staying on top of communication. Try not to make yourself crazy with Dr. Google, it happens a lot around here. Jot down everything you asked here and have it ready so when you speak with the oncologist he can put your mind at ease. Let us know what happens OK?

Thanks Rocky’s dad and Jerry So talked to the doctor. He doesn’t know if the urea(bun) levels are carboplatin related, will have to wait and see how Snoopys blood work evolves. The creatinine levels, he says looks like stage 1 kidney disease. No advice other than making sure he has access to water.
Stage one kidney disease is not uncommon in dogs or cats. It can stay stage 1 for a long time too. And yes, I habe been there. There are prescription diets that focus on kidney health, such as k/D by hills. Talk to your doc and see if that needs to be managed.

If he is in stage 1 kidney failure I would do more than make sure he has access to water. The future blood work should help determine the status of the kidneys, urine tests are also important.
Tri-Pug Maggie developed stage 1 renal (kidney) failure about 3 years after her amp and chemo for mast cell cancer- the chemo is different than that used for OSA. Her first symptoms were weight loss, which I had attributed to her aging. She developed incontinence which is when the renal failure was diagnosed which was months after I noticed the slight weight loss. Kidney failure is manageable for quite awhile, but it is better to get out in front of it, I think I would have had better luck managing it if I had been able to attack it sooner.
I don't mean to scare you but knowledge is power! I would ask lots of questions of your vet and get a solid diagnosis.
