I've had my dog on metronomic therapy for about six months and she's gained about two pounds per month over the course of three months or so. Does anyone else have this problem? I'm wondering if water retention is a side effect. She takes low dosage every other day and has done very well thus far. I took her in for lab work today and will know the results tomorrow. Her white count is a bit low but the vet doesn't seem concerned. It's a bit lower this month than last and he thinks it's possible she's developing a bladder infection though there's no real signs yet.

Shes on Piroxicam 10mg and cyclsophosphamide 10 mg every other day. I also give her extra vitamins. She eats very good and drinks lots of water. Her bathroom habits are the same as ever.

Good question! We've moved it here from the Tech Support forum to this Treatment and Care forum where more members will see it and hopefully be able to answer. If your don't receive ample feedback, consider posting in the Ask A Vet forum.

Jerry never experienced any water retention during his metronomic treatment, though he was on Metacam with the Cytoxan. It is very important to make sure dogs on metronomics do drink lots of water and more importantly, get lots of potty breaks due to the potential for kidney toxicity. It is also best to give the cyclsophosphamide early in the day.

What "extra vitamins" is she getting? Perhaps that may be the cause for water retention. And are you sure it is water retention? Some dogs gain wait after amputation due to getting less exercise.

Pepper has not had any amputation. The vitamins I give her is a powder that I mix in some water and mix with her feed twice a day. It's by Solid Gold. I don't think there's anything in there that would cause retention. The vet doesn't seem to feel that's the issue and I can't find it as a side effect. The vet thinks it could be a minor thyroid problem and, if so, he'll give her medication for that. Hopefully, if that's what it is, the medication will take care of the problem. I'll know more when we get her blood work back.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I posted to the wrong place. To be honest, I had an awful time figuring out even where or how to post.
