We went to the ER this evening. Caira's fever just wasn't breaking. So here's some news. We shouldn't have wrapped her in cold towels or taken her outside and gotten her feet wet to try to break her fever. That's what made it worse. The way he explained it to me was that the hypothalmus reacts to the cold by making the body HOTTER. good gravy. What next.
So, they told me that dogs don't really have seizures at temperatures of 105. And that I didn't need to bring her in for SQ fluids until 106.
That said, she still feels horrible. We switched to another antibiotic. Her bloodwork was done. white blood cells elevated a lot more. She's slightly anemic. And the worse thing....her lung mets are huge. Just huge. However, her lungs are still working properly, the blood gases were normal.
We are going to give it 48 hours to see if the new antibiotic works. We can't hardly stand another day like this. He said if this antibiotic doesn't work, then we are basically to believe that the whole thing is due to lung inflammation from the mets. There's nothing else to do.
So there's an update, and a little information about fevers. I hope that someday in the future someone will read through this and it will help.
May 2001-Jan 21, 2010.....I'm a dog and I'm AWESOME!..... Always.
Oh I feel soooooo very sorry for you Caira Sue....this cancer shit just SUCKS.
The "guest Gina" poster is my sister. She is a Vet Tech...she worked for a traditional vet for 13 years and for the past almost 10 a holistic vet. SHE is the one that got my fevers down....with Belladonna...as she posted about. I had a fever shortly after amputation... no tradtional vet could help/figure out why. Switching antibiotics did no good. Food for thought.....might be worth a try.
I am thinking of you through all of this.........BE STRONG Caira Sue.
Tracy, Maggie's Mom
Maggie was amputated for soft tissue sarcoma 10-20-09
Maggie lost her battle with kidney disease on 8-24-13
I'm so sorry about Caira Sue's lung mets getting so big now... Hoping that the new antibiotics help out... She is such a sweetheart and what a tough little cookie!!!
My thoughts and prayers are with you all...
Angel Jake's Mom

Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!

My heart goes out to you with the stress that comes from this battle. Raven was on death's door and the vet's all had a grim prognosis and he rallied! Keep Raven in your thoughts as you wait this out. With him we gave him amoxicillin (because it targets the liver where his nodules are) *and* Baytril because it's wider spectrum and really whacked the heck out of his infection. Which was sooo bad that he was visibly bloated in the abdomen, was necrotic and dying tissue inside with gassy bubbles, and was septic and sent him into systemic shock. He also got corticosteroids (dexamethasone) as an anti-inflamatory. We pulled out the big guns as we had nothing to lose and were hoping, at best, to reduce the discomfort. But a few weeks of this and we knocked it back enough that he's doing well now. So, there is hope. It's not over until it's over. You will know.
I completely relate to the fact that this is all more difficult than losing parents. I believe it is because they are more like kids to us. We nurture and raise them up like children. And living in our household, they impact our daily routines in our life so much more when they are gone. My prayers are with you. Hang in there!
Dawn and Raven
Rottie Raven, osteosarcoma at 8-1/2 years old, amputation in October '09 and in February '10 due to liver mets he went back to heaven where he came from. raven.tripawds.com
Now I have Miles, rottie mix amputee from a shelter and traveled 1500 miles to find his way here through the Rescue Railroad thanks to tripawds.com. miles.tripawds.com
Oh Caira Sue, please get better.
Mom and dad - my thoughts are with you. I hope this is just a bump in the road and we'll hear good news soon.
Comet hates Clavamox, too. It took me months to convince my vet it made her sick. A specialists vet knew it and put her on cipro which is like 10 cents a pill and doesn't seem to bother her tummy. (she has diskospondylitis, not cancer).
Keep us updated!
Hugs and Love Barks!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Hi Caira Sue:
I am so sorry to hear that you are having problems. I was just thinking of the fruit bat the other day, I had looked out the window and the evening shadows had amplifed Caya's silhouette and you could see a perfect shadow that looked just like Caira Sue's avatar. I didn't have the camera close enough to take a pic of it.
When Tika started having fever issues we pulled her off everything and started SubQ metacam. When the fever stabilized (like others mentioned thought to be body fighting the lung mets and lung mets burst) we switched to Pred. That bought us almost two more months with our little fur factory.
I wish you the best of luck, I am so sorry you are going through this.

Oh guys.... I am sooo sorry... I wish I had something good to say to bring a bit of comfort to you. Know that we are all here and pulling for your fur baby...
Alisa
Shilo diagnosed with osteosarcoma 9/4/2009, amputation 9/9/2009. ShiloAnne lost her battle 11/23/2009 where she regained her fourth leg and is patiently waiting for her parents to join her. We will always love you baby girl.
I know that some of you have been watching Caira's progress very closely. I felt horrible that I couldn't update before work last night, or during work. And then I couldn't get the website to work this morning (not your issue, sure it's the old 'puter here). Leaving you guys with no update forever and worrying. Those who know Adam, know he would love to get on here, but needs a push. I invite you to email him at mailto:a.g.pope@gmail.com
So now I have a chinese herb, as well as belladonna, at my bedside.
But here's the thing. She feels better. She's brighter, she's jumping up to go for rides, she's wagging her tail, she's charging the yard. She jumped up on Adam last night when he got home from work and pushed him over and kissed him until he cried. She had a good night. She has no more fevers.
Her chest is larger. I know we don't have much time, but I honestly thought I would be coming home from work this morning to put her down. She showed me what she thought of that by running all over the yard!
So today, is not the day, my dear tripawd friends. Not today.
In Bob and Spirit Cherry's manner, we celebrate life. Today.
