Hi All just another update, Breeze is still doing well apart from a cut she picked up on her front pad whist out walking.
Had a call from the Animal Hospital today, they left a message on my answerphone, and I can't speak with them now until tomorrow. This is what they said:
The results of the Biopsy are back and it's not Osteosarcome, it is a sarcoma so we need to change the treatment, we can discuss this on your next visit.
Anyway Breeze is having chemo with carboplatin and has tolerated it well, now this will play on my mind for the next 12 hours until I can speak with them. Have any of you got an idea? I hear the next most common form is Chondrosarcoma, which only spreads in about 20% of cases?

Can't you find out what kind of 'sarcoma' today or can you really not call and get at least that much information? There seem to be a couple kinds so it would be nice to know. If you can't call, well I guess it is best to try to not gets hopes up or down until you do find out more. (Ha, easier said than done, I know.)

Oh boy that would make us nuts. Well at least it's not osteosarcoma, we have no idea what it could be. Here's a link to info about the different types of canine bone cancer. Hope this helps somewhat.Try not to make yourself nuts while you wait.
Sorry to hear Breeze got an owie. Is it bad?

I cannot imagine them leaving that kind of message, how frustrating. It is obvious they deal with this every day, unlike the folks they treat.

We tried calling them back and they left the message 2 mins before they switched over to the out of hours service, so frustrating ahhhhhhhh.
Even more frustrating was they rang my mobile which was turned on with full signal but the network must have been busy.
Lets all hope it's something less aggressive. The cut on her paw is about 6mm and round like a hole. The vet looked at it today and said not much can be done just rest her up, which really doesn't help when we are truing to build her up.
I bought some Ruffwear boots for her the Bark n Boots. Got the sizing right but the one on her front paw seems to twist around as she walks with them, it ends up with the sole facing up.
It's starting to drive me nuts now!

Oh what a frustrating message!!! You'd think they could leave you with a little more detail... Oh well, guess you'll find out tomorrow... Let us know!!! I think that maybe the other possible sarcomas might have a bit better prognosis... I hope!!!

Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. I had the same problem with the boots. on the front foot. You have to get them really tight, and that worried me some also. I did try using socks with them and wasn't successful with that either. I save them for times when I don't know what kind of surface Trouble may be walking on - like when we took her to New Orleans and I knew there would be tile floors in the hotel lobby.
Hope the owie on her foot heals quickly. It's tough when they aren't 100% on their remaining limb. Oh, and lots of good thoughts coming your way for the phone call tomorrow.

We agree with Hugapitbull, try tightening the Ruff Wear boots up more. And although Hugapitbull didn't have luck with the socks, we did with Wyatt. Check out our review and tips for using the boots and socks in our Gear blog.
Did your vet suggest anything (i.e., Neosporin?) to put on the paw boo-boo? Ouch!

If the sore on her foot is circular it may be a pressure sore, due to the foot hitting the ground in a different way now that she is a tripawd. Tazzie got one within a few weeks of amputation but it healed with Epsom salt soaks and topical antibiotics (we used Silvadene). The Ruffwear boots fit Tazzie pretty well but we did have to use an athletic ankle sock to prevent twisting.
I hope that the biopsy report says chondrosarcoma or fibrosarcoma since those don't spread as often. Hemangiosarcoma would be worse but still treatable with chemo although they might change to Adriamycin.

Genie had the same problem with the Ruff Wear Griptrax boots. They kept twisting! I didn't want to tighten that much on her front paw cause her dew claw was right at the velcro line. I ended up not putting any on her and she didn't mind! I only let her run free on snow. If there were ice patches ahead, I would need to hold on to the handle on her Ruffwear harness .

awww... I am sooo sorry, that has to be so frustrating!!! I totally agree with hugapitbull they sound like they need lessons on the other side of the message... My thoughts are with you that you get some rest tonight... HOpe you find out first thing in the morning...
Shilo diagnosed with osteosarcoma 9/4/2009, amputation 9/9/2009. ShiloAnne lost her battle 11/23/2009 where she regained her fourth leg and is patiently waiting for her parents to join her. We will always love you baby girl.

Rang them at 9am they finally came back to me at 3pm!
The Tumour is not OSA (Osteosarcoma), so it did not originate from the bone. It is a soft tissue sarcoma???? The type of sarcoma is not identifiable so they call it an undisclosed sarcoma.
The lab reports have confirmed that the sarcoma has potential for mets but less than OSA, at this point I don't know how much less.
They are going to change the chemo treatment she is receiving to a drug called something like Epirubicin? It was a bad line and quite difficult to understand her over the phone. I should really have asked her to spell it.
Well not sure if this is some slightly better news or not.

Sounds as though a soft tissue sarcoma is highly preferable to OSA (crazy for us to prefer one cancer over the other, but that is the way tripawd life is). Will they be able to get any more diagnostic info? I just did a quick search and it looks like that term embraces lots of varieties. I found one website that has nice easy to understand explanations, plus a clear explanation of metronomics for people who are interested.

That's definitely progress! Yep, it is nuts that we have to say "oh well, this cancer isn't as bad as that one," but it's true. Check out our friend Calpurnia, who was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma over two years ago. She is fourteen now and still out there with her sled dog team! Her story will definitely give you hope.
Three Paws, Two Years, No Problem!
Let us know about that drug they are going to give Breeze, we'd love to know the exact name of it.
