Hi All
Boomer had a good night in that she only got up one time at around 130am but just for a few minutes. She has gone a 2 very short walks and peed quite well. She has not been able to go #2 since Thursday and I can tell it is bothering her, she is letting out some nasty gas which is not at all like her. She is now whining quite a bit, I don't know if she is in pain or if it is the meds but it sure is disconcerting to me. I believe it is normal but it is worse today than yesterday. So some good news and some not so good but generally speaking it is good. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Constipation is pretty normal. You can try giving her a bit of pumpkin or Metamucil in her food, olive oil or even fish oil supplements that can help get things moving along. High fiber is key. Rest assured, many dogs have gone almost 4 or 5 days without poopin after surgery.
We hope today is a great day for you both!

Denali's surgery was on a Thursday and she did not poop until Sunday (I just checked her daily journal I've been keeping). Yesterday she only went out in the AM, I could not get her to go out in the PM - so it might be a bit of a struggle but I've been assured this is normal.

Jake didn't poop until the second or third day, I think. I know (from personal experience) that the pain meds will definitely cause constipation... So it's real important to keep your doggie very well hydrated. A good idea on top of adding fish oil and stuff, is to add water or chicken broth to their food... so they have no choice but to take in water... Also, it can be a little weird/hard for them to figure out how to balance properly while they do their #2...
We used a sling with Jake... but he didn't poop until we actually let go of it and let him figure things out on his own. Plus, I guess he wasn't used to having to go with us standing right next to him... I know I can't go when someone is standing next to me! OK... TMI right??!!

I think everything is on track, dad!
The pumpkin will do the trick. Just buy some can pumpkin (not the one with spices for pumpkin pie, just plain pumpkin). My vet suggested this when I went overboard on pepto with Comet and made her constipated. He worked like magic!
And just remember…if this was a human amp, then you'd still probably be in the hospital or even ICU! It is super duper major surgery. Each day will be a little different. Some good, some not so. That whey we call the post amp recovery: Hell Week times 2! But it gets better!

Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
I know in my area canned pumpkin is still hard to find (the pumpkin crops of 2009 got all damaged and most of the farmers lost their pumpkins). I've hears sweet potatoes will also help.
My REGULAR grocery stores do not have canned pumpkin... my ORGANIC grocery store does...

So true about not being able to find non-organic pumpkin. Like you, I did find organic pumpkin in an organic health food store. And yep, steamed sweet potato is pretty much the same thing and can help as well.
