Biopsy and then amputation or the other way around?

So we got the official biopsy results back and they are what we suspected in the first place a week ago... it looks like osteosarcoma.   The vet has no idea why such a young dog would get it, and why it would be in the center of her tibia... he said bones affected with OSA can sometimes heal pathologic fractures.  Anyway, I'm not feeling super optimistic about her chances, but we'll do what we can... starting with an amputation tomorrow morning at 8am.

Wish her luck!

I'm sorry the results were not better news. Hope all goes well with the surgery tomorrow morning.

Try to have hope! Prepare for the worst- but hope for the best!

None of us ever get "enough" time with our dogs - even if they are healthy and live long lives, we always want more time. We all just have to make the best of the time we have. Hang in there!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Aw crap! Sorry to hear the biopsy results. Hope all goes smoothly with the surgery. Thinking of you and sending hugs.
Hang in there.

I'm not sure what time zone you're in, but you're likely at 8:00 so I'm thinking of you! Keep us updated. Wishing you only the best.

Sending lots of positive thoughts and prayers for an uneventful surgery and a speedy recovery!!!

My Charley was diagnosed at age 2 and in my research, I did find that there is a spike of OSA diagnosed in dogs in the 18-24 months (or so) range.  Never give up hope!  My Charley just celebrated his 17 Month Ampuversary on 3/28/12 and he turned 4 on 3/29/12.

Hugs and chocolate labby kisses,

Ellen & Charley

Thanks for the good wishes! The vet called this afternoon and said that he's done with the surgery and the blood loss was minimal and everything went smoothly. He said he anticipates an easy recovery and is keeping her on pain medications.  He said they'd be taking her out for her first pee this evening.  I don't know when tomorrow I'll be able to pick her up, but I figured I'd call in the morning.  We're all a little nervous...  but it'll be good to have the waiting-for-bad-news part over and the recovery part started.

Hooray for the surgery going well! Rest up tonight!

Be aware that some dogs are going on adrenalin and still feeling ok from the heavy duty pain meds when they get home, so she might seem to be doing great and then crash after a day or two - that is perfectly normal!

Be sure to come here a lot during her recovery -  just to keep us posted and to ask any questions. We've all been there. And we join in the 'first poop as a tripawd' celebration. Cuz we're weird that way. big-grin

Be prepared for her to amaze and inspire you.
