When we went to sleep, he had almost no drainage at all, I woke up this morning when it was time for his pills, and he had completely soaked through the pad and the shirt he was wearing and the wound was dripping pretty steady. Got him out of the shirt and back into the stretchy red stuff from Laura, put a new pad on and took him out to pee. He went out and peed, and by the time he was done, he needed a new pad, put one on, got him in and settled and he fell right to sleep. I cleaned things up and found my phone and started composing a text to Laura. By an hour later, no more dripping, just some seepage and he's fast asleep. It doesn't smell bad either. His incision had been a bit swollen yesterday, as was his front leg, now both have significantly decreased. Just waiting to hear back from Laura, this is her usual day off, so she doesn't wake up too early and since the drainage has all but stopped, I am not too worried at the moment. I'll update once I hear back from her, but figured I might as well share. Here's a link to a pic of the incision. http://s21.post...../image.jpg

Just talked to Laura, she said no worries with the drainage. She said since the wound is starting to close that's why the drainage stopped, but since there's still swelling it just punched back through the wound. She's going to take out his staples on Friday!

Kat,

Like Laura said its normal.  The incision looks pretty good to me.  Just keep an eye on it.  I am glad to hear A'Tuin is doing well

The incision does look pretty good! I'm sure you were a bit freaked out, and I would have been, too. Dakota did not have any drainage or seepage to speak of. Some, but nothing noteworthy. So yeah, I'd be concerned, too. Glad the incision looks so neat and clean. Glad your boy's doing well.

Oh it's soooo hard not to panic, but you've got Laura the Lifeline thankfully, that's awesome. Yeah, it's pretty normal and as long as it's more watery than bloody, and not stinky, you're in good shape. Keep us posted!

Phew..   good news.. !!

sometimes the wounds will drain with a build up of fluid, but I would have been very concerned too if there that that much!!  I am sure that the build up of the fluid is making him uncomfortable as well..

but things will get better.. incision looks good.. once he gets balanced on pain meds.. he will be hopping around in no time!!!

Thanks everyone for all the encouragement, it helps having others to freak out to! Both Mema and A'Tuin are sleeping right now, so I took the time to write another update on my blog!

Hi Kat...just read your blog posts.  You are a talented writer!  I'm just starting down this path with my lab too (6 days post amputation) so a lot of this sounds familiar.  Good Luck to both of you with the staple removal on Friday.

Thank you! I've been writing on my iPad so I know it's all full of mistakes, but I appreciate the kudos :)

How is your lab doing? I think day 6 was probably A'Tuin's worst day at home - of course, my view is a bit skewed because I saw him and spent a lot of time with him immediately post surgery since I had access to my stepmom's practice, so everything is better than the zonked out mess and his druggy first steps in the hospital. He's actually started on another noticeable uptick in feeling better today. I think he must know staples come out soon!

I remember TJs big red blood 'boob'... That's one treat they don't really tell you about.

Vet "Your dog is fine.. you can take him home... don't worry about the swelling.. its natural"

Me "At what point is a large, saggy bright red blood boob 'Normal' on *any* creature"

Vet "It'll go away in a few days"

Me "Some things cannot be unseen!!!"

TJ's fine.... I am still coping with the memory of... well... you know.

Tuck is doing amazingly well...I think.  I will be home with him until his 2 week checkup so I'm grateful for that.  He seems restless these last few days...not sure if it is meds or getting accustomed to his new reality.  I'm glad A'Tuin is feeling better....I will be following closely to see how he feels after his staples are removed.
