We thought our Brody boy had osteosarcoma and just found out it was a synovial cell tumor. When we did the biopsy but it was so small in size (abt 1cm) they couldn't 100% confirm what type of cancer it was. But now that he had his amputation and they examined the entire limb, they were able to confirm. Thanks for any feedback. Julie :-)

Hi, Julie,

My Willow had synovial cell sarcoma. She had her amputation and diagnosis before I adopted her, so I didn't go through the process and get to ask the questions until later. She lived 2 1/2 wonderful years after amputation and without any chemo. No cancer is good, but I was told this one isn't quite as aggressive as osteosarcoma. Good luck!

Carol

Hey, look what I found! http://tripawds.....ll-cancer/

~ K&J

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

Hey Julie,

While we all hate that it's cancer, as Willow's Mom said, this type of cancer isn't nearly as bad as osteosarcoma so yay for that! Lots and lots of dogs here have had it so I'm hoping their people will chime in (Katy thank you for sharing that link!).

Meanwhile here is an excellent PDF download from Michigan Veterinary Specialists about Synovial Cell Cancer Tumors in dogs

Synovial Cell Tumors

"The grade of the tumor, based on the biopsy report, will have a dramatic impact on the long-term survival times. Grade 1 and 2 synovial cell sarcomas are commonly cured with survival times commonly exceeding 3 years. Grade 3 synovial cell sarcomas generally have a high rate of tumor metastasis and reported median survival times of 7 months. Special stains of the biopsies can also be done to help differentiate the specific types of joint tumors and predict potential patient survival."
