While we were out of town for a week, I boarded  Daisy and Monkeybutt Samson at our therapy vets during which time Sam received 2 accupuncture treatments to see if it would help his arthritis. Hes been home 2 days now and his back end is significantly weaker and he is limping. It may perhaps just be too late for treatments (he started the "collasping back end" about a month ago. Anyway- I'm not sure if I should take him back this week for the other 2 treatments or not...anyone else had any any experience with their dog getting worse after accupuncture?

( I did talk to the vets office and they said sometimes they get worse after treatment before they get better but I guess I just want some feedback)

Spirit Samson was Spirit Tripawd Daisys four legged "brother" and ruled as the self proclaimed head of the Monkeybutt Federations East Coast Division. Lady Chunky Monkey stayed from Oct 2011 and left for the bridge in Apr 2012. Miss Perdy is left and has some big pawprints to fill.

Oh Samson, don't pull that Monkey Dog business on us! Are you doing that because you missed us while your Mommy was away?! Just kidding. Hope you feel better.

My Mom says that yes, she has heard this too, it's called a "healing crisis," where the body gets worse before it gets better when getting rid of toxins, whatever that is. Keep an eye on it though and it your back feels any worse go in for a visit OK?

P.S. We moved your post here, since this about "Treatment" OK? Just didn't want it to get lost.

we've never had a 'bad' reaction, but they can happen.  did they just do needles or did they do electrical stimulation too?  maybe there was too much stimulation for an initial visit.  we didn't start adding the electric until about a month or more in....  paws crossed he feels better soon!

Samson!  I've missed you so much!  And now I find out that you were tortured!  I noticed Daisy Doodoo isn't complaining!   Let me know if I need to send in a Monkeydog Brigad!

I think Trouble had this kind of reaction.  She was already in bad shape (mobility wise) when I found a local acupuncturist.  After her treatment she was initially better for a few hours and then she steadily lost mobility from there.  She had her only acupuncture on Friday and we had to release her on Wednesday.  Do I blame the acupuncture?  No.  If I had it to do over again, I would have tried it sooner.

Wishing Sampson the very best.

Here's some feedback from our Facebook page:

Tracy Snow-Cormier: "that's correct.. They can feel worse before they feel better. Goes for chiropractic too....Maggie got worse before better on her last treatments."

Stacy Lock: "Yep...what happens is that built up toxins get released. Just like when we go to the chiro, accu, or even a massage...they tell you to drink extra water for the next 24 hours to flush out your system. For dogs, maybe a little extra enticement to the water would be a good idea? (ie add tuna water, beef blood - I know sounds gross, but it's useful and at the bottom of the stryofoam anyway when you take off the steak...)"

Casey Gardner: "All 4 of my dogs had acupuncture at some point in their lives. Once or twice they felt worse with a treatment but usually they felt much better and moved much more freely. Hang in there and give another treatment a shot. Hope he feels better soon. I think acupuncture and Chinese Herbs are what allowed my golden mix to live to 17! She started treatments at 14."
