6 days out from foreleg amputation;unsure if progressing normally.

Miss Molly, my 14 y.o. Cat had a right forelimb amputation last  Thursday. I took her to my local vet on Tues as she wasn't drinking/peeing. She was just laying in one spot and was vocal in the night. Vet gave her Fentanyl patch, sub-q fluids and buprenophine for me to administer until Fentanyl kicked in. Two days later and she's only peed twice. No BM's since surgery - due to pain med? She has steadily eaten 2 packages of 1.4 oz fancy feast broth/food and I've given her 36 ML bone broth daily. She cont.'s lying in one spot, rarely getting up. Wound site looks good. She seems to just want to snuggle with me and sleep. Are we progressing normally? Am I just being overly anxious? Histopathology results yesterday revealed soft tissue sarcoma - grade 2.

Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

Did Miss Molly come home after the surgery with pain meds or did she just get them when you took her to your local vet?

My pug Maggie didn't poop until 6 or 7 days after her surgery, due to pain meds and her inability to keep her balance while trying to poop. Can she get into her litter box?

Can Miss Molly get around on her own at all? Snuggling and sleeping are what she needs right now, and if she is sleeping it sounds like you have her pain managed now.  What you describe at first sounds like pain.  Eating is generally a good sign.

Our kitty members will be along shortly and they can give you better information.

In the meantime you might look through the Three Legged Cat Forum.  Our cat members have done a great job collecting cat specific information there.

I just want to add that after Orlando's toe amputation he was sent home with a Fentanyl patch and a heavy dose of Tramadol. He did not pee, poop, eat, or drink water, but basically remained more or less comatose on the floor. By the third day I was on the phone to the hospital and I was reassured that animals respond that way after surgery which lead to my own internet search and concerns about the patch and tramadol. I called back, was authorized to remove the patch and to administer the tramadol as I saw fit....and yes, I did keep him on a reduced dose as I am sure that there was pain. I don't want to give the impression that I told him to man up and face it because I did not. Huge improvement once I did that.....but you have to check with your vet to make sure that is what is going on with your baby. Good luck to you and Miss Molly. Orlando's best friends are a Maine Coon named Billy and an orange baby named Jamie.
