Hi I am new here your post have been really helpful so far. Beast is 4 days post surgery to amputate his back leg. So far he has been great up and walking right away got in the car on his own pooped the first day home. But in the last 24 hours he has stopped eating he is still acting hungry I have tried wet food and treats he eats some. He is also whining and acting super paranoid now. Anyone have any suggestions on getting him to eat a bit more and calming him down?

The first couple weeks of recovery can be a roller coaster. The symptoms you describe sound could be side-effects from the pain medication, or poor pain management . It's a fine line and often difficult to determine... What is Beast taking?
Search these forums and the blogs and you'll find lots of tips for stimulating appetite.
Try to take things one day at a time, and please keep us posted!

Hi Beastmom. My first thought is that Beast is either on too much pain med, not enough pain med, or not the right pain med.
Blaze stayed in the hospital three nights and was on some heavy duty meds day three. When he came home I kept him on his pre surgery meds for the first week. Then I cut him back to the discharge dose. Today, day 12, he does not want to eat or take any meds.

Welcome to you and Beast... your dog? Hard to tell from your avatar, but sounds like a dog.
That's how my pug Maggie acted on Tramadol...what meds is Beast on? As Admin said, it is difficult to tell the difference between pain and the effects of pain meds. Coming home after surgery he still had the surgery meds in him, it is not unusual for what seems to be a set back when you get your pup home and the surgery meds wash out.
Talk with your vet about his pain meds. There may be some room for adjustment so that he is calmer while remaining comfortable.
Many dogs don't eat much the first few days, I wouldn't worry too much unless it goes on for days. Of course you are probably trying to get him to take meds!
Tell us more about Beast- is he a Saint? How big, how old? All those details will help us help you.

Thanks guys Beast is a "smalll" Saintbernard he is 4 and was 111 lbs. now 100. He had synovial cell sarcoma in his elbow. Currently he is taking 100mg deramaxx once a day and 100mg tramadol every 8 hours he still has his fentanyl patch on as well that comes off tomorrow. He has settled down for now and is sleeping thankfully. I will call my Vet tomorrow for sure.
went to the vet yesterday he got another fentynol patch and they upped his tramadol for the night he will start gabapentin today....went back to the vet this morning because he had painful swelling. The vet said ice it then heat plus short walks around the yard to get the fluid to help reabsorb into his system. My Saint Bernard actually relaxed and fell asleep under the heated blanket. He usually likes cold and snow not heat. It will be another long week of care but I think we are making progress.
Hi there .... my girl, Shelby, paced something awful after her amp. We attributed it to the meds. We also got her on an anti-anxiety pill that helped a bit ... hang in there ... it DOES get better!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
