I think Katy and Jackson are on to something... Shelby was the same way. Total princess of perfection at the vet but at home, same thing, shaking, hiding (in the bathroom), etc. I have come to terms w/that Shelby "milks" it a bit for me and is always MORE excited to see people other than me. He's still pretty soon off his surgery, right? It took Shelby about 3 weeks to get her real personality back and we still do struggle. But it was a full 2 weeks of her simply taking to the bathroom to get away from me. I suspect he's trying to be mellow and recover. As Jerry has said in here before, dogs in the wild tend to go off someplace to heal so perhaps that is what his crate is to him. That he DOES eat is a good thing but you might not want to encourage eating in the crate. I am trying to break a habit of holding Shelby on my lap while I eat since that just isn't acceptable behavior. 🙂

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Good! Glad you followed your gut and went to the vet.

When I would lug "el chunko" (Happy Hannah) to my refular vet during those first few weeks becase I was so worried about her slow recovery and not seeing any "sparkle".....BINGO...BANGO.....BOOM.....Miss Personality tail waggng, happy dog took over!

I remember Katy and others giving me the same advice avout doing something different to stimulate her. I did have a friend come over and make a real big deal about seekng her...praising...clapping...hugs, etc. And she dis, indeed perk up.

Your Marshall is aoooooo early in recovery and is just using all his energy to recover from this major surgery. Humans would still be the hospital!

Did the vet adjust the pain meds at all? Up? Or even down? What did he connect the heavy breating to? Glad hs breathing is better today.

Yeah, just let Marshall rest and all of the certain you'll see his sparkle come back. He feels vulnerable right now and the crate is his security den.

This recoveryprocess such a rough, rough time for many dogs. For the first three weeks I was in an absolxute panic thinking she would never recover! Happy Hannah and I just celebrated her eleven month ampuversary and moving forward (knocking on wood)! Every single dayis sacred and a treasured gift! We are havng a blast! Her sparkle is back bigger and better than ever before! And the same will be true for Marshall!

Hang in there and hang ontous! Staying connected to this community is the best therapy ever!

Sending you lots of hugs.....a qazillion hugs!

Sally and Happy Hannah

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

I'm glad things are looking better.

Did your vet aspirate that lump just to be sure?

He thinks the heavy breathing is related to the medicine. He adjusted the tramadol down. He didn't aspirate the lump. I will have them recheck it when he gets his stitches out. I hope that they will aspirate it

Let us know if the meds helped.

Ask for an aspirate. Never ignore an unusual lump or wait and see. If it turns out to be nothing you'll be relieved.

His last tramadol was 24 hours ago and he only had 1 pill. He has only been out of his crate 2 times since then door open
most of the time he just won't interact. His seroma is really large. He doesn't seem to be in pain. His lymph node came back clear!!!! The Dr called yesterday

How many days ago was his op? The first 2 weeks were a roller coaster. Good days and bad days. Barret did the heavy breathing thing too, but we actually increased the pain meds. He was on tramadol and gabapentin for a lot longer than most of the other dogs here, maybe 3-4 weeks (gradually stepping down dose). He also had a lot of phantom limb pain.

Here's hoping that recovery gets by quickly! Good luck!

Barret was diagnosed with Hemangiopericytoma May 16, 2013. Front left leg/scapula/pectoral muscle was amputated on June 11, 2013 and we've never looked back. Follow our story on http://barret.t.....pawds.com/ and read my column on That Pet Blog

Yeah, you still have a ways to go until everything is back to normal. Hang in there, it will get better and you'll get through it together :)

Let me preface this with: I AM NOT A VET - So you should call your vet if you think he is in pain or his pain isn't being managed well.

That said, every dog is an individual and reacts differently or needs different amounts of meds. If he hasn't had tramadol in 24 hours and still seems uncomfortable or in pain, it is my unqualified opinion that he may need more pain meds. I prefer to air on the side of too many pain meds instead of too few. Tramadol is pretty safe according to my vet and the dosage range is huge (from just a little to a whole lotta drugs for one dog).

Barret is 20lbs and was on 2 gabapentin per day and 3 tramadol per day for two weeks (i forget the exact mg), followed by 2 gabapentin, 2 tramadol for a week, then just gabapentin for the last 2 weeks.

Another thing that helped tremendously was being meticulous about giving his meds EXACTLY when they were due. I would set an alarm for every 6 hours and he would get the drug right away, whether he looked bad or not. It helps to stay ahead of the pain and prevent it from becoming worse.

Good luck and let us know how today is going!

He has had 2 people over at different times that he loves. He was a little more perky for them. Going to the vet perked him up for a while and on the way home saturday he stopped at his grandmothers house and that made him happy for about 5 minutes then he went to sleep. Once he's outside he likes to be there but just lays in the snow.

Snow can feel really good on the incision site. I'm glad he perked up for your visitors. I wonder if a few more this week will help? Or maybe he'll perk up at the sight of the mail carrier? Too bad we can't get a Tripawd pawty going on at your place to lift his spirits!

He is in love with our UPS guy. When he was well he loves playing fetch with him and going on his truck. He came by last week to see him hopefully he will come back this week.
