Hi Everyone - We have just joined the ranks of the prestigious community of tripawdssmileyOur Saint Bernard Patch had is front leg amputate last night due to bone cancerwhat-everI just wanted to say that we were quite mortified when we brought him home and he immediately took a face plant into the yard!  It made us both sick to our stomachs!  I reached out right away to the hotline and got someone named Sally!  She was amazing and so reassuring and comforting.  I already feel as if I have a friend that will help me through this horrible process.

I am so thankful for this site and I will be here often as our sweet baby learns his new life as a tripawd!

Hi Summer! Sorry to hear Patch got diagnosed, and that you had to bring him home the same day, that is really rough, especially with a big dawg. But you'll get through this, I know you will, and in a couple of weeks you'll wonder why you were so worried.

I remember our Jerry's first face plant, I cried too. Then I realized that he reacts to my emotions. So I stopped crying whenever he had a misstep, and all of us started to feel better. The stronger he got, the more he amazed us and proved that he was handling it much better than we were.

Keep us posted. And please consider starting a new topic all about Patch in "Size and Age Matters" so we can follow along with Patch's recovery. That Forum topic is a great place for giant breed dog stories. See you there!

So Shammy ended up with in infection in the incision area which ripped it open. This all happened within 1 day. We go back to the vets tomorrow for a checkup. I did start a blog so you all can see some pictures of my girl. It's a work in progress but there's some pics up now. Here's the link. http://shammyth.....foundland/

Gosh! Thanks for the update. Okay, at least you know what was goi g on and why the incy came open. This really does boggle my mind. So within three days of surgery the incision burst open due to a raging infection? Did the surgeon say why?

What course of treatment is the vet dping? Did he culture the infection to pinpoint the best antibiotic? Fever? Does he have a drain, packing ,etc. Guess I'm asking too many questions. Shammy is giving us an opportunity to learn het a other nuance of this crazy journey!

Sorry this challenge has popped up. At least you are in the process of getting it resolved.

BTW..loooooove the picture of Shammy in her blog!

Hang in there! And eat chocolate by the ha dful...it helps!

Awwww darn! Well at least it's figured out and being treated. What did the vet recommend for caring for the incision/infection?

Shammy is such a doll! Love that photo. Thanks for starting a blog!

So finally have a chance to update. Shammy was on two antibiotics and it started messing with her stomach badly and she didn't eat for 4 days. Today they got the culture back and they took her off the one antibiotic so hopefully her tummy will start to feel better soon. She did finally eat some hamburger today!! Also wanted to share this, not asking for any of you to donate just wanted to share the nice words my friend wrote and surprised me with.

Just read what your friend about you. Lovely, just lovely. I hope you realize what an exceptional Soul you are. Clearly you have a huge heart and have touched a lot of lives with your compassion and selfless giving to others. You've also obviously had a lot of "challenges" in your life, and now the situation with Shammy, yet you remain strong and continue you to help others. I sincerely hope some of that goodness that you put out comes back to you. It will, in some form or another, it will. The Universe always gives back to those who give.

Thanks for taking the time to update on Shammy. I know you have a lot on your plate right now. It's good to hear that Shammy's tummy issues are behind her a d the infection seems to be getting better too! Whew! The ups and downs during this recovery period are crazzzzy!!

Glad she's eating! A couple of drive thru burgers for a few days should help even more!!

Hang in there! It gets better!! Take care of YOU too!

Lots of love!

Just catching up on Shammy's story...  What a doll!  I hope she's starting to feel better now.  Murphy had oral chemo, CCNU, and had no problems with it.  I think some of the dogs maybe have some nausea, but I think that's the most common problem.

Murphy had his right front leg amputated due to histiocytic sarcoma at 7 years old. He survived 4 years, 2 months & 1 week, only to be taken by hemangiosarcoma at 11 1/2 years 6/12/17

So sou ds like Shammy got through all the infection "stuff" okay and was feeling much better by time of chemo?

My Happy Hannah did not have any side effects from her four rounds of Carboplatin. However, many do. It's generally loss of appetite, maybe feeling a little lethergice and maybe acting a little nauseous. It may last just a couple of days. Sometimes it shows up around day 3 - 5...sometimes a bit sooner, sometimes a bit later and, again, sometimes not al all!!

The vet probably gave you some Cerenia if the nausea shows up.
I know this sounds very weird, but I actually think my Happy Hannah really started getting her sparkle back consistently after her first dose! Craaaaazy!

So glad Shammy is doing better. Goodness knows she...and you...have had enough challenges. Cheering for you sweet Shammy!

Hugs!

Chemo #1 (carboplatin) also wasn't bad for us.  Slept a lot the day of.  One liquid poop on about day 5, treated with the metronidazole that the oncologist had given us and it took care of it. Chemo #2 was a bit harder - one squishy poop on day 3 and started the metronidazole.  Nausea, evidenced by extreme drooling and lip licking about day 5 and took the Cerenia for 3 days.  He never actually vomited or stopped eating.  There were days after the Cerenia where he seemed a bit quiet/ill, but at times seemed better after he ate.  Nothing so far bad enough for me to consider stopping chemo.  I know others have had more difficult experiences however.  Chemo #3 tomorrow.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Chemo #3 - oncologist put him on Pepcid AC which really seems to help.  Otherwise, no major issues, slept day of, and now seems a bit lethargic some days.  If it follows pattern of #2, he should pep up by end of the week.  Any issues for you on chemo #1?
