Hi all

Daisy had her rear left leg amputated about 2 months ago. She was doing so good but now it seems like she's falling more often and even become scared of stairs. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced a set back? Should I be taking her to the vet?

Thanks everyone

A vet visit would clear up any questions that is for sure.  It could be the remaining leg is being overworked, or it could be something else.  I would say it couldn't hurt to have a professional opinion.

I don't let my Sammy tackle stairs unless he has on his harness, and I am helping him.  I just don't want to take a chance he would injure his remaining leg.  It depends on the dog for that one, some do great, some need some help.

I will be thinking about Daisy and hoping for good news for you,

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us.  Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.

It does sound like Daisy needs time to strengthen her leg. Rear-leggers tend to take longer to build muscle mass.

What kind of exercises and stretching does Daisy get daily? Walks and "explosive" running (As Dr. Waldman calls it) do not develop strength, only endurance. Before going to your regular vet, we might suggest consulting with a veterinary rehab specialist or ortho vet.

Good luck, please keep us posted.

Thanks everyone for your help.

We're going to do some Hydrotherapy and hope that helps. I will let everyone know the progress.

Thanks
