Hello Tripawd Community!

Long time no post (eek grad student life, thankfully only a few more months to go!), but on Monday Chloe goes in for lump removal/teeth cleaning.  She had her yearly checkup a couple days ago and even though she is still in excellent health at the age of 12 (bloodwork, stool and urine normal), she has a small hard suspicious lump on her back leg that the vet recommends getting removed. way-confused

The lump is about the size of a large pea, is embedded within the skin along the hairline of her back leg and does not cause her any pain when poked or pinched. Because of the placement, the vet can easily get a good margin of excision (not on muscle or connective tissue), so once removed it will be biopsied. And to save me $ we are getting bottom line analysis: cancer or not cancer.

And even though her bloodwork is great, I still want to get it removed since her spindle cell sarcoma presented that way: she had a cancerous tumor even though she was in perfect health. And since she is on her last leg (pun intended), I'd also rather get it removed when its small since we don't have the dramatic solution of amputation on the table anymore.

So fingers crossed and pawsitve thoughts for Chloe! I want her to continue to be a rockin' warrior princess tripawd on her 3rd ampuversary in a couple months!

Chloe became a rear amp tripawd on 7-29-10. Another tumor was removed on front leg 2-20-14. Found 3rd tumor on neck 2-2015, but she's still kicking cancer's butt at age 14. Chloe's blog

Paws and fingers crossed, from one grad-student to another!  Both of you can rock this thing!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. Fingers and three paws crossed for Chloe's uneventful mass removal and dental. She will rock this, no doubt, and celebrate many more ampuversaries! Please keep us posted, and thanks for welcoming me and Abe to the group.

Nicole! It's wonderful to see you and Chloe here again! I was thinking about you the other day when I was flipping through the Kill Barney Guidebook!

Well, I'm going to stay pawsitive that the lump is nothing serious OK? So I won't even go there. But I WILL SAY
HOPPY ALMOST-THREE-YEAR-AMPUVERSARY!!!!!

You've been here for so long, it's always wonderful to see another Tripawd Hero loving life to the fullest for a long, long time.

I'm curious, how did the gulping situation turn out? I assume it's not a problem any more? Sure hope so!

Sally, Katy, Jen and Jay: Thanks for the pawsitve thoughts :) Greatly appreciated!!!

Rene: Thanks for the pre-ampuversary wishes! Hard to believe since those years just flew by! She does still have gulping issues...but she's been living with them for a year now and still in good health, so no reason to really worry about them anymore. Unless she were to start having GI issues like vomiting and diarhhea (but thankfully she doesn't!). And how's Wyatt? I'll have to check up on his blog, last I read he was going for lots more testing. Oh and I was so sad to hear Queen Nova passed, she had to have been one of the longest, older, cancer surviving tripawds here! Her legacy is inspiring and I hope Chloe can live out a few more years happy and healthy :)

Those pics are just adorable! You two have such a strong bond, it really shows in the pics.

I'm SO glad to hear Chloe is doing great. I think your approach about the gulping issue is perfect, and probably really saving your sanity (and your wallet) too. Good job on taking care of her health, you really are such a great advocate.

Wyatt is doing well, thanks for asking! He has no more signs of the infection or whatever it was (docs still don't know!) so we're not questioning it, he's well.

Yes, I agree, it was a very dark, sad day when Nova left us, but what an incredible legacy she left behind. Like Nova, Chloe is a pawesome Tripawds member who is touching lives and inspiring people everywhere by winning the cancer battle and living a long, hoppy life. We send all our best for a long, long life ahead!

And congrats to you on nearly finishing school. I can't believe you've been here the whole time you've been studying. Wow! What will you do when you're done?

Hi Nicole! I've wondered about you and how you were doing. I assumed no news was good news and am glad to know that was the case. Chloe looks as good as always, which of course means she looks spectacular! Keep us posted on the lumpy leg, ok?

Update: Chloe's vet called and said that her surgery went well! No problems going under, the lump was easily extracted (no surprises), no teeth extractions needed, she's got nice pearly whites now and I'll be able to pick her up at 4pm!

To stave off my slight worry, I went to the gym after I dropped her off, had a phone meeting and been working at a nearby starbucks (free wifi)! I still have a few more hours to kill so I might run a few more errands getting some extra things for chloe (mostly for sore mouth), like some canned food, chicken broth, watermelon and some of her fave treats! I do give her a little bit of watermelon as a treat once in a while now, ever since a chunk fell on the floor and she scarfed it up and begged for more!

Replies:

Rene: Hopefully I'll find a job teaching or something after I graduate!

Shari: Yes, for the most part no news is good news, lol, though it wouldn't hurt for me to write good news too!

Stay tuned for some cone of shame picts after I pick her up!

Home update: finally got home! After spending nearly 8 hrs in a city 30 mi away (too much traffic to just drive back home, then drive back up to pick her up; would be at least 2 hrs of time driving both trips in best case scenario), I finally have Chloe home! Yay!

Doc says biopsy results come Fri or Mon. Fingers crossed for B9!  He wanted to get a slightly larger margin on one end of the lump, but it was close to a major vein going up the back of the leg. The entire lump is gone, he just wanted to have a bit more 'non lumpy' tissue to extract for safety.  Though if it is cancerous, they have the tendency to send up long microscopic tendrils of cancerous cells...so "just cuz their aint no more lump, don't mean there ain't no more bad cells in the leg".

Chloe's very sad face in the cone of shame . She is also tired from the procedure.  I think her leg is also a bit sore since she was having a bit of trouble walking back in the house.

Awww Chloe! You DO look tired! I'm so sorry you have to wear the cone for a few days. Your Momma is so good to you though, you know she takes you to the vet 'cause she loves you right? And now your teeth will be brighter than the moon! Lucky girl.

I'm glad that lumpy ol' tumor is gone. It's gonna be B9, I just know it. After all, you're a strong, amazing girl who's overcome so much in your long beautiful life, that little pesky lump wouldn't dare stick around in any form whatsoever!

Your doctor sounds really great. Please let us know when it's time to kick off our B9 celebration OK?

P.S. Nicole you will be a great teacher!

Rene: Yes, the vet office we go to has wonderful DVMs and nurses. We've seen 2 diff general doctors (since they alternate days of week they work) and 2 diff specialists over the past 3 years and ALL have been wonderful! Plus its a 24 hr hospital, so its a good place to go for emergencies (like getting a foxtail in the eye removed....). And I hope to be a great teacher someday, thanks for the vote of confidence smiley

Awesome. We always say that if a person can work with a good, larger clinic with multiple vets it's so much easier because you can have everything under one roof and get second opinions without having to hunt around for a new practice.

You're a great dog Mom for always being so conscientious when it comes to Chloe's care. Totally devoted!
