Hi Everbody

My name is Stephanie and I recently adopted my tripawd from a rescue group here in East Texas.  She was horribly and badly abused and was eventually shot and left on the side of the road to die.  Fortunately a good samaritan saw her dying along the highway and got her to a vet who amputated her left front leg.  She spent seven months at a rescue organization before I adopted her.

She is a very sweet girl but she is terribly frightened by men.  I am working closely with her on socialization but I need some advice on training.  I need to begin to train her on the basics (sit, down, stay, etc.) but I am not sure that the same methods I would use on a four legged dog would work on her.  Does anyone have any advice for me?  Are there resources out there to help me with my tripawd?

Stephanie

Welcome, and thanks for asking!

Basic obedience training is no different for a Tripawd. Unless the task is especially challenging with a missing limb, use your preferred training methods. Please keep us posted! You future forum posts will not require moderation.

Hi Stephanie, welcome! Thank you so much for adopting your sweet pup. Where in East Texas are you? Our official address is in Livingston. Are we neighbors? :)

I agree, the training methods you would use for a four legger would be nearly the same for a three legger. About the only thing is that sometimes with on-leash training it can be a challenge because Tripawds walk faster to keep up momentum in order to stay balanced. That can be hard and you may need to accommodate her physical needs there.  What I would be focusing more on are her trust issues.

One place I always recommend new pawrents visit is MySmartPuppy.com. Our friend Sarah Wilson wrote My Smart Puppy and runs an online community staffed with behaviorists and trainers. We found her methods and suggestions extremely valuable when training Tripawds Spokespup Wyatt Ray Dawg. Check out the books she wrote

If you visit MSP, let them know we sent you. I'm sure others will chime in here with their own training experiences too.
