Dr. Nancy Kay recently wrote this blog post about "Betsy's Law," which requires New Jersey vets to disclose whether or not they have overnight care. We hope it will encourage everyone to advocate for similar laws in your own states.

Betsy’s Law: New Jersey Veterinarians Must Disclose Absence of Overnight Supervision for Hospitalized Patients

"Although I don’t know Madeleine Kayser, I feel certain she is a profoundly passionate and persistent woman. Eight years of tenacious hard work on her part were required to achieve implementation of “Betsy’s Law”. Passed in September 2015, this New Jersey law requires veterinarians to notify their clients if they do not provide 24-hour care for hospitalized animals.

According to Betsy’s Law this notification can be accomplished by placing signage in a “conspicuous location” with the following language: “This veterinary facility does NOT provide supervision for animals after normal business hours by a person physically on these premises.” The sign must be printed in a font of at least 24-point. Notification can also be performed via placing this message in a font of at least 12-point on an intake/admissions from provided to the client." READ MORE

Read the link a out Betsy and how this came aout. What a sad and horrible story...one that should never have happened.

Standing ovation to Ms. Kayser for having the strength and courage to give an empowering meaning to this senseless tragedy.

And ro the Vet who spoke out against the need for this "notice"...hard to phantom his rationale.

Betsy! Your earthly lofe certainly made a difference and clearly you loved a lofe of purpose! Great job to you AND your human!!

I know we don't have a law like this but my vet is very upfront & honest.  They stated when Sassy had her amputation that they did not have overnight care and they tell people that they need to take their dog to the ER clinic if an overnight observation or stay is needed.  I chose to take Sassy home with their permission and the understanding that if needed to get her to the ER clinic right away.

They also post it on their intake forms that no overnight care is available.
