I hope the admins don't mind that I am posting treatment research from PubMed, but I think it helps us make these big decisions as we try to do the best for our pups.
This is concerning small dogs.

Interesting! I wonder if the small size of cats and these dogs correlates when it comes to chemo as chemo is not genuinely given to cats with osa, amputation alone is the recommendation. Jill only had chemo because her tumor had already metastasized
Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Do we mind? Heck no, we LOVE info like this, thank you for sharing it with us. Feel free to share more anytime. The more we can all try to wrap our heads around research and information out there so we can have good two-way convos with our vets, the better off our animals will be
So to me, the conclusion for this study sounds like small dogs have an advantage when it comes to osteo dx, treatment & median survival times (MST)?
CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE:
For the small-breed dogs with appendicular osteosarcoma of the present study, tumor histologic grade and mitotic index were subjectively lower and MST following amputation of the affected limb without adjuvant chemotherapy was longer, compared with those for similarly affected larger dogs. Results indicated no significant advantage in MST for dogs that underwent curative-intent treatment versus dogs that underwent amputation only, and further investigation of the importance of adjuvant chemotherapy is warranted.

Great question Erica! We will have an oncologist on Tripawd Talk Radio in February, that's a good question to ask.
