Here we go, I'm slightly dreading this (please, please, please, don't put 'Clare' as the topic title...)
I'm having problems replying to comments on Meg's blog. I've tried several times in the last twenty minutes or so, most recently at 16.15 GMT and my IP address is 85.255.232.254
What happens is I submit the reply but it doesn't show up beneath the comment, and then when I try and submit it again, it says duplicate comment detected. Screenshots below. The blog is http://megsta.t...../#comments
I've cleared the cache and history etc.
Thanks for your help.

No need for dread... The "duplicate comment" error indicates that the comment did indeed post the first time, but was likely spammed. And this particular case does not come as a surprise. The content of the comment included "xxx".
We checked your spammed comment queue, and sure enough the comment is there. We have left it there for you, so you can see where these comments end up, and how to approve them, or delete them permanently. (It is good practice to empty the spam comments periodically.)
- Visit Meg's blog Dashboard -> Comments.
- Click/tap the Spam link.
- Review and approve any legitimate comments by clicking Not Spam.
(For comments from previously unapproved users, these will then also need to be approved) - Click Empty Spam to delete all spam comments
If you would like us to approve the comment for you, we can certainly do that.
Please note that once a user has a comment spammed on a blog, future comments from that user (on that blog) may be more susceptible to getting spammed again. Akisment (the anti-spam plugin) is smart, and will "learn" how to separate the spam from the ham (false positives like this) over time.
Hope this helps! Please advise if problems persist.
Note To Anyone searching this Tech Support forum about comments not appearing or the Duplicate Comment error: Check your Spam queue if this occurs on your own blog, or send a message to the blog owner if it happens when posting comments on other Tripawds Blogs .

Thanks, Admin Guy. I despammed the comment and then approved it and it appeared. I've now replied to all the other comments on the same blog post and every single one went to spam, and needed to be retrieved from spam and then approved before it would appear. I also commented on Purrkins blog and that also went to spam (two comments, in fact), so I emailed her as you suggested and she approved them, and they appeared http://purrkins.....16-months/
It's not the end of the world and we can work around it, but I don't understand why this is suddenly happening. It's never happened before, and generally when you've approved a comment from someone once you don't need to keep on doing so. It's aa though we've been blacklisted
I do take your point about the "xxx". Meg is a very loving dog and tends to add kisses automatically, but I have told her she must at least attempt to desist. In the last response (on the same page linked to in my comment above) there weren't any kisses but it still went straight to spam.
As I say, it's not the end of the world, but if you have any ideas about what else we can do to try and stop this happening, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks for your help.

Exactly. The same thing goes for for spammed comments as for previously approved comments, though Akismet is a bit more proactive and aggressive on the spam side – since that'ts what they do – often resulting in false positives. Once user's email address and IP address have been flagged as spam, Akismet algorithms (on their servers) may take some time to re-learn the validity of future comments.
Unfortunately the public and website administrators have no control over Akismet nor access to any sort of dashboard for moanaging blacklists. We have researched possible spam comment whitelist plugins, and the only solutions is rather old and no longer developed which causes security concerns if activated. Deactivating Akismet is also not an option.
Long story short, hopefully this will resolve itself over time.

UPDATE: This article is rather old, but the steps provided may (but should) be a quick way to help Akismet learn that comments from a particular user should not be spammed...we have not tested this theory:
If you are a WordPress blogger and you are having the problem of Akismet treating your comments as spam, please try following the following steps:
1. Go to your blog on the computer that you have had the problems posting comments
2. Make certain that you are signed out of your admin panel
3. Find a post on your blog and post several comments with your email and URL manually the way you would on another person’s blog
4. Login to your WordPress admin panel and mark the “spam” comments then “de-mark spam comments”
5. Repeat steps 1-4 above periodically until the comments stop being marked as spam

That's great. Thanks. I'll give it a go.

I've tried it. Irritatingly, when I'm not logged in and post as though on someone else's blog, it doesn't spam my comments. I still have to approve them, obviously, but it doesn't send them to spam. When I then tried again to respond when logged in, it sent it to spam again. Never mind, hopefully it will resolve itself in time. Thanks again for your help.

Then do that, a number of times, and follow the previous instructions to "un-spam" the cmments and hopefully teach Akismet a thing or two...

I've changed my comments to not spam maybe twenty times now and it's still sending them all directly to spam, but here's something weird (at least to me). When I click on the history of a cleared comment, it shows that Akismet cleared it first and then it was marked as spam.
Here's a comment sitting in spam, waiting to be cleared
And here is the history of the comment, once it's been cleared:
I don't know if this tells you anything. It tells me I should tell Admin Guy, but that's about it
The only vaguely similar thing I can think of is that whenever Gizmo comments on Meg's blog, I always have to approve each comment. With him, and only with him, it never remembers that I have approved his comments before. There's an example of one of his comments on this page http://megsta.t.....ino-sighs/
So maybe that is some sort of bug? And I'm wondering if we've caught another one?
Thanks again,
Clare

And also, the history isn't right. I think it actually changes. See below. This comment was sent to spam. Every single comment I have made since Meg's most recent blog post has been sent to spam (the only exception being when I logged out, as instructed, and posted using my email etc.). But the history is no longer showing this. It just shows it as having been approved.
And also, when you look at the list of comments, some of them show me as having 3 approved, and some of them 83 approved. So what's that about?
I could email Akismet for help, but I'm wondering if the problem isn't Akismet, but some sort of bug marking my comments as spam?
And now I will stop, I promise. Honestly, like a dog with a bone....
Thanks,
Clare

There was no guarantee that the suggestions in that 10 year old blog post would be the magic bullet. We doubt those steps have made matters any worse, though they they may have caused some confusion – in people and bots alike.
While Akismet will learn from false positives, the education is not immediate. Your stats indicate 9 false positives, all this month, most in the past 24 hours, over the life of Meg's blog. Our only explanation at this time is that we must wait and see, while continuing to instruct Akismet what is spam, and what is ham.
We will keep monitoring this and investigate the issue further as time allows. Thank you for your patience.

So...thanks for all the details. This all got us thinking.
There is more at play here than just Akismet. The Tripawds network is also protected by the Wordfence security plugin. A few settings may have affected the odd comment History noted above. In WordPress it's possible for someone who is not a member on your website to post a comment and to specify an email address of a real member on your site. (A suggested remedy in the old blog post.) This behavior is suspicious since it may be incorporated into a more sophisticated attack. So, Wordfence was likely doing its job by spamming the comments after they were cleared by Akismet.
We'll dig deeper when we can, but cannot risk disabling certain security features that protect all 1,200+ blogs on the network.
Please stay tuned...

It’s 16 times, not 9, ( it’s sending all my comments to spam, on other peoples blogs as well as my own) but I get your point. I was just trying to think if it could be something else. I’m just going to leave it.
