if you're making a list of 'dont like's'...
Sure, go ahead, gripe all ya want. Anyone else?
There are plenty of technical reasons I don't need to get into for explaining why certain data isn't dynamic upon every page load anymore. Suffice it to say, these forums are functioning more "properly" than they ever have before, even if the functionality may take some getting used too.
Stay tuned for another update coming soon, which addresses a server timestamp issue which may be affecting certain things previously mentioned throughout this topic.
Please stand by...

Are you speaking of the list of recent topics with unread posts on the Forums home page? Do you mean the "New/Recently Updated Topics" in the QuickLinks menu at the top? Or are you referring to your personal list of topics with unread posts that pops up from the icon below the QuickLinks menu?
If I'm reading what you wrote correctly, all three of those are sometimes wrong. But from reading your response I guess it is possibly happening because I don't log out - I just close my browser window when I'm done catching up. I didn't realize we got "timed out" so maybe that is what's happening? Even though I've closed my browser and actually put my ipad/laptop into 'sleep' mode the site still thinks I'm there, because I didn't log out? So only the stuff that's new since it timed me out is what's showing as new? If that is what's happening, I never had that problem before. I always just close the browser and don't bother to log out.
I'm sorta confoosed...
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Good news: You're not alone!
The topics with unread posts count resets after 20 minutes of inactivity. It's always been this way, in fact the timeout limit used to be 15 minutes. If this technique was not in place, we would not even be able to offer any such lists of unread posts at all.
You don't need to log out. The forums will consider the first time you load a page to be your first visit since the last time you did so and start counting from there. So if you log in, and keep the forums open without doing anything for 20 minutes, the count could change without you doing anything, depending on forum activity.
Viewing the forums from different IP addresses opens a whole new can of worms since the cookie stored on one machine's browser will be out of sync with any set on another device. Mmmmm... cookies...
Clear as mud?
