Does anyone know how long before our Doberman who had her front leg amputated three weeks ago can run and stop without falling. Miss Stella can hop/run but falls when trying to stop if running to fast. Any replies would be really appreciated. Thanks

Hi Bobbi, welcome to Tripawds. Consider joining as a member so your future posts won't need approval and will appear right away.

Your pup sounds pretty normal as far as the stumbling goes, at least in the early days. In fact we used to call Jerry "Mister Stumbles." Three weeks isn't a very long time, most Tripawds need time to build up core muscle strength, which is a pretty new concept to most pawrents, until something like this happens. There are lots of easy, fun ways you can do that. Our Gear blog has lots of tips like this:

Why Longer Walks Won't Strengthen a Tripawd's Leg Muscles

Best of Tripawds Gear and Fitness Tips for Three Legged Dogs

And the Tripawds rehab book, Loving Life on Three Legs

How old/young is your dobie? Why did she lose her leg? We look forward to hearing more!

HI Bobbi and Stella!

Jerry pretty much has said it all and given you great links.

Hope you do come back and tell us more about Stella. She sounds like.she's doing really, really well. Tripawds generally move at a faster.pace as the momentum helps keep their balance and keep moving forward. She may just be takingit a touch too fast though.

Sending you good wishes for a continued great recovery. Know we are here to support you any way we can!

Hi Bobbi and Stella,

My Leland was a Dobie boy and a hind leg amp.  I can't say he had issues with stumbling.  His problem was getting himself up from the ground after laying down.  I think front amps and hind amps have different things to work out after amputation.  It sounds like Stella is still learning how to balance her weight...don't worry she'll get it figured out.  My Leland had finally started learning how to get up without assistance around the 3 week point.  With larger breed dogs it just takes them a little more time to get things worked out.

As others have said please consider joining this community.  The people here provide a lot of support and great advice as they've gone through the same journey you are on now.  Plus we'd love to see pictures of your wonderful Stella!  I've been here since the beginning of June and Stella is the first Dobie I've seen except my Leland.  There may have been older members with Dobies but I've not gone back through old forum postings.

Sending Stella positive thoughts on her journey!
