Hi All, our lovely flatcoat Morven had implants placed in her back hip and leg 8 yrs ago, we're fighting infection from her ear which has travelled to the hip and we're looking at them being explanted, fairly confident its not the dreaded C-word. She's now 9 and we are facing if the explant doesn't go well, it'll be rear leg amputation. I want her to have quality of life and not suffer, but I'm genuinely questioning whether its fair to put her through so much so late in life. All of the images of amputee dogs are making me more upset at the thought....any input from anyone? x

Hi Karen,

Sorry to hear about your dog. What's her name? And what's a Morven? I've never heard of the breed, do tell!

Nine years isn't the oldest dog we've ever had join us as an amputee, but I understand your concerns. How does your vet feel about your dog being a good candidate for amputation, should it be necessary? Have you received a second or even third opinion? Oftentimes multiple opinions can help you feel confident in whatever decision you choose.

Amputation isn't right for every dog or cat. But for the vast majority of animals it gives them an excellent quality of life and more happy times together with their pack.
