It’s funny you should say this because I learned my lesson with those long leads with our “small” (65 lbs) dog. She is not good on recall and I used to take her to an open field to play with some other neighborhood dogs. I used a 30 ft lead to give her freedom. Well, one day I was absorbed in talking to someone and she took off running full speed after another dog in play and next thing you know, I was in the air then being dragged about 10 feet before I could regain control. Of course, I was not letting go of that leash even if it killed me because there was a road at the end of the field! Fortunately, no one had a phone out to film. My Dad was with me, though, and he just LOVES telling this story whenever he has a chance. 🙄 I can only imagine how far I might be propelled if Honor was at the end of one of those running at a bear! 😂

Eustacia when you take Honor for leash walks, you can try one of those 20 ft 30 ft long training leashes. That gives him a little more freedom and gives you the security of being able to hold him back if he sees a bear.😱 Of course, right now the main thing is to keep his walks short to avoid fracture and eliminating pain as best as possible while he's going under this treatment.
Honor really is such a good boy. Extra smooches for him from us.🥰
Long lines are great for a lot of things, but I'm not sure this is a good use case. Honor is a very large, very strong dog. If he goes after prey and has 20' or more of line in addition to his leverage advantage from being lower to the ground, he's just going to rip the leash out of Eustacia's hands or, worse, pull her over.
Honor, you are absolutely melting my heart with that precious celebration picture!!!
I know everone will be ,glad to get back home, espec Honor. . Sooooo. hope this treatment is working and from the looks of that picture, he certainly looks happy!
Happy Graduation Day Honor🥳🥳

So…things were going really well. Yesterday, I took Honor over to our neighborhood lake to walk around and he was walking so much better and had more energy. Then, last night we had a mishap. 🙁 I have been extremely careful to put his leash on before we head outside. Our yard is fully fenced but in past he has occasionally spotted something outside and gone flying out to the far end of the fence. Before all this, it used to be amusing. I had told my husband he must have a leash on when outside. Our other dog had scared a bear back into the woods shortly before my husband was heading out to take Honor for a short walk. For some unknown reason (probably thinking about work), he opened the door before clipping his leash on and Honor barreled right past him and went running to the far side of the fence. He said he had never done that to him before so he wasn’t expecting it but, to me, it was entirely predictable as there had just recently been a bear outside and Honor smells their scent for some time and has always gone crazy running around the yard afterwards. Now, I feel like he isn’t walking as well as he was yesterday. It’s not fractured. He’s not limping and he is putting weight on it but things aren’t as good and I have no idea how to assess what damage is done. I’m still feeling angry about it and feel like, if a fracture happens at any point, I am going to blame this incident.
And, here we have the downside of stereotactic radiation. One careless mistake could ruin everything and, even if I am 100 percent committed to not making a mistake, I’m not the only person in the house. Just praying not too much damage was done and agreement has been made that no doors are opened unless leash is on and in hand.
Can only imagine how upsetting this can be. Try not to think in terms of "damage", but maybe more along the lines of he has pulled a muscle (maybe a shoulder muscle or back muscle). It ,may be that with some solid rest, antiinflmmatory and pain meds he will get better. Speak to the Vet about any other guidelines.
As you know, this treatment is a temporary fix and the leg will always be fragile. The main goal is to alleviate pain as much as possible for as long as possible. Try not to be too hard on uour husband. I'm sure he feels horrible But keep in mind, even the slightest tweak or misstep could cause a limp to return.,,,,it doesn necessarily have to be some big event like his "bear. run" yesterday. HOWEVER, the fact that he isn't limping and is putting weight on it is actually a good sign!!
Nothing can take away from the fact you are doing everything possible for Honor and have been giving him exquisite care.
Let us know if the rest and the meds take hold, okay? It may a couple of days so try and be patient.
FWIW, Honor must have been so proud of himself to "scare" that bear away (in his mind anyway). 😉 Through all this it just shows how determined that silly boy Honor is to be himself.

Thanks Sally. Unfortunately, he has gone back to head bobbing and favoring his good leg. He has also largely not wanted to move around today. 🙁 Honestly, I knew this was possible with the radiation and we would need to be careful. I WAS being super careful. And I am trying not to place blame, but it’s difficult because I feel like I saw a light and it was snuffed out before I even got to fully enjoy it. I had banked on 4-6 months being a worst case scenario I might get out of this; not days. To make matters worse, our UF appt would have been Thurs and I have now missed out on the vaccine as well. I feel like I could not have messed this up any worse.
Eustacia, you did not mess this up. You are obviously trying very hard to do right by Honor. Unfortunately, none of us can wrap our loved ones (animal or human) in bubble wrap and protect them from the slightest misstep. Your husband made an error in judgements. It sucks, but it happens. There are no guarantees in life. Give Honor lots of love and enjoy the time you have to the best of your ability.
Just checking in to see how Honor is doing and to see how you are doing. I hope you had a chance to catch your breath and perhaps have spoken with the vets to find ways to continue manage the pain
I know at one point you felt that amputation would be a next step if the radiation wasn't working. Just wondering if that's still on your plate as an option.
Anyway, just know we are here for you and thinking of you

Thanks so much for your posts which helped me more than I can say. He is doing a little better today…I think. We drove over to our neighborhood lake this morning, walked a bit and then he laid in the grass and I sat beside him and we both enjoyed watching all of the water birds. No matter how long we stay, he does not want to leave and I usually have to lure him to the car and up the ramp with treats. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind sitting out there all day myself! Promised him we would go back tomorrow…and every day we can. It’s been a great way to replace our old morning routine of long walks around the neighborhood. Wish I had thought of it sooner, but the vets who misdiagnosed him had me thinking I needed to strictly rest him so his leg would get better. Well, now we now that certainly was never going to happen. Anyway, don’t want to get myself thinking about that again!
I’m nervous about chemo on Thurs. Instead of focusing on the larger percentage of dogs that fo fine with it, of course I’m dwelling on the 5 percent that have severe reactions. I think I’m going to ask her for cerenia, an anti diarrhea medication and anything else to handle symptoms that might come up. Can anyone recommend anything additional I should have on hand? I read something about weakened immune system and keeping away from other dogs. Hopefully, that doesn’t mean our own other dogs. Also, I hope we can still continue going over to the lake.
So glad he enjoyed the Lake visit. It truly is therapeutic for dogs when they are out in Nature (and hoomans too).
Woth dogs it's about all the scents they can sniff on the breeze, listening to the sounds.....not about how far or fast they can walk. I'm so happy you two have found a way to enjoy jist "being". So enjoy the peace the two of you find st the lake just chillin'
FWIW, back in the day, I wasn't even given any instructions about being arou d the chemo when Happy Hannah had it. Basically though, just don't be handling his poop ..duh. I think avoid slobbery kisses for a bit. If I recall it the "chemo" disappears pretty quickly out of potty, saliva, etc. Just double check with the Onco..
And yes, Cerenia is good for nausea to jave on hand. You can even give him a dose the day of the chemo.
Not sure I would give him any anti-diarrhea Med at this point. Obviously if he has issues you can have something on hand from the vet and give it to him then.
Would love to post some Lake pics of Honor....hint
