I am so saddened to hear this. Zane nearly passed during surgery as well. His blood pressure dropped and required hapastat to get him going again. This is the 3rd Dane to die during surgery in the past 2 weeks. I just lost one of my wobbler group members yesterday.

I am so sorry that Sterling has died far too soon. {{{ Hugz }}} from afar.

RIP sweet Angel Sterling

I am so sorry you lost Sterling so suddenly.  Please don't second guess yourself.  It sounds like you were doing your very best to give him the best chance at a pain free life.

Please come back if you need to talk.  Nothing anyone can say can dampen the shock and pain, but all of us here understand the connection we have with our pups and how devastating the loss can be.

Oh, oh, oh!  I'm incredibly sorry for you and your family.  I looked forward to hearing about Sterling.  I wanted to get to know him.

My hope is that you'll come back and be apart of this community.  It's not fair.  And we'll will help you get through this.  I promise you it will be therapy to come over and tell us about Sterling.  Plus, we do care and want to know more.

My deepest condolences,

This is so horribly sad.  I am so sorry.  I hope that it brings you comfort that you were trying to do everything you could to save Sterling.  Our thoughts and prayers are with your family during this time of grief.

I am so very sorry for your sudden and tragic loss. I have no words that will ease your pain. Please, as Angel Comet's Mum said, come back and tell us all about your lovely Sterling. He seemed like such a great boy. My heart is breaking for you.

I am very sad to hear of the loss of your big boy.  It is hard to say what might have happened but a lot of times these big dogs can have an undiagnosed heart disease called cardiomyopathy.  Some dogs have no symptoms (cough or audible heart murmur) so unless your vet does a special test such as an echocardiogram or ECG it could be missed until the anesthetic stresses out the heart muscle.  Danes are also prone to a disease called Addison's disease which affects the adrenal gland so that in times of stress the body does not make enough cortisol so can't respond well and the animal will "crash".

I am very sorry.

Pam

Thank you all for your kind words. I really appreciate them. The vets had Sterling's leg almost off and he started to hemorrhage. They stopped the bleeding but there must have been too much strain on his heart. His blood pressure and pulse had dropped and then his heart stopped. They tried everything they could to bring him back but nothing worked. We never expected to lose him during surgery. We are still in shock. A few weeks ago we didn't even know anything was wrong with him and now he is gone. He had been limping a bit and had one day of really bad pain but the medication they added for the pain and the basically bed rest for him made him seem perfectly normal. He was a beautiful dog on the outside but even more beautiful inside. We miss him badly. It still feels very surreal.

Thank you all again and thanks for having such a wonderful forum! I will definitely keep visiting!

Mary
