Today is Rocky's special day, please celebrate with us.
For those of you who don't know Rocky, I'll give you a brief background.
Rocky is an almost 10 year old lab mix who lost his right foreleg to Osteosarcoma. We chose not to do chemo and thought we would be lucky to have him for 6 months. But here it is, 1 year later and we feel so blessed to still have him in our lives.
He had a bumpy start post amp due to horrible sores that developed on his mouth, and remaining legs. But he pushed through, and has been a wonderful inspiration to our family and to those who meet him.
He has been doing really, really well this past year. He is on Synflex and Power Mushrooms which I think is a good combination for him. While I think his vet thinks I'm a little strange giving him mushrooms, I truly believe they work and are part of the reason he is still as happy and healthy as he is.
He did pay a visit to his vet yesterday though, because lately I feel as if his activity level isn't what it should be. I thought he might be having joint issues. I didn't for a minute believe it was cancer related and his vet agrees with me. She said his weight is right where it should be at 85 lb. and his heart and lungs sound good. She noticed a small reaction from him when manipulating his lower spine and right hip, but feels as if it is a touch of arthritis setting in. I am to give him 2- 100mg Rimadyl 2X per day for 5 days. and see if there is an improvement in his mobility, if so, I will switch over to Metacam and use on an as needed basis. (I had a 1/2 bottle of Rimadyl here at the house I wanted to use up, but will switch to Metacam due the fact I can get it for $4 at Walmart).
If I see no improvement, the next step would be to get him back in for some x-rays to see what's going on.
Because of the threat of severe weather today, we celebrated his ampuversary yesterday. I took him down to the lake to run around and play in the water and while he tired quickly, he had a great time – it's one of his favorite places to go. Later that evening I grilled him up a steak and he looked at me like I had lost my mind! You see, I never give my animals table scraps or people food (except for carrots and apples for treats). It was really funny, he would look at the steak in his bowl and look at me, then back at the steak. I told him it's OK Rocky, it's for you, special guy! Then he gobbled it right up!!
Because of Rocky's sensitive stomach issues, I would never risk giving him ice cream, but maybe his fellow tripawd friends could have some today in his honor.
While I don't post very often, I am on the tripawds site daily and try to keep up with all of the stories of celebration, sorrow and the wealth of information that our members share with each other. This site is invaluable to me and I appreciate each and every one here.
Michelle and Rocky
Congrats to Rocky! One year is an awesome ampuversary and deserves a steak in his honor 😉
Michelle, you post is truely inspirational. It reminds us they can beat the odds. My friend whose dog fought lymphoma swore by the mushrooms. She did her own mix, but was very similar to Power Mushrooms. I'm not remembering the exact time with Kato, but I'm thinking he was just past 3 years from diagnosis when he left us. He was 14 years old, not sure that just old age didn't get him. I hope Rocky sees at least that long.
Way to go, you two!

Michelle and Rocky,
Only word that comes to mind is YEA!!!!!! You go Rocky and enjoy every moment. We can definately remember your start, but it does not seem as if it has been a full year. However, the calendar never lies and the memory bank has been increased tremendously during this year. These milestones are definately reason to PAWRTY and it sounds as if you did it right - extra hugs, extra playtime, and very special treats. Keep up the pawsitive attitude and keep on expecting many more ampuversaries.
We will be watching for news regarding the mobility issue, but as long as Rocky can still have such enjoyable outings as the lake, then his life is still full. Also looking forward to a photo of that happy face (hint!!)

Tazzie's mom, Rocky has been on mushrooms for 8 months. A month or so ago, we ran out of them for a couple of weeks and I could really tell a difference in his energy level.
Bob, did you see the video that Comet's mom made for Rocky? You'll have to check it out (sorry, I'm not sure how to post the link to the video but it's under anything goes).

Maggie lost her battle with kidney disease on 8-24-13
Wow!! Happy 1 YEAR Ampuversary Rocky!! You are such an inspiration to all of us!
Mackenzie's on the power mushrooms too - just curious - how much do you take every day? I noticed a huge difference with Mackenzie's energy level as soon as she started taking them - didn't know if it was wishful thinking, my imagination or the real deal but it sure did seem to make a difference. She's also on Metacam - our oncologist said it has anti-cancer fighting agents that are really good so she takes that as a preventative. But I have to ask - you can get this at Walmart for $4??? I pay so much for this and was told that I can only get it at a vets because it's not a human prescription (a little bottle - forget the amount - is about $100!). So would love to know more about that.
Here's to many, many more ampuversaries, grilled steaks and celebrations! Way to go Rocky!
Kami (Mackenzie's Mom)
My sweet golden Mackenzie. She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2 although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009. She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes. I love you Mackenzie!
