Pig ears with salmonella risk recalled

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Illinois company is recalling pet chews made of pig's ears because they could be contaminated with salmonella.

One illness, to a dog in Missouri, has been linked to the chews, called Pig Ears for Pet Treats. The product is being recalled by the Keys Manufacturing Co. Inc. of Paris, Ill.

Salmonella can affect animals, and there is risk to people from handling contaminated pet products.

The bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Pets with salmonella may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea fever and vomiting.

The pet treats were distributed in Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.

Consumers can return the pet treats to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Thanks for posting this!

We choose not to give pig ears to Wyatt, though he'd surely gobble them up. Therein lies the problem...

When a PetSmart clerk described how her dog nearly died and she spent thousands of dollars on surgeries repairing the dog's trachea that was torn up by a swallowed pig ear fragment, we thanked her and kindly asked her to return the "treat" we were about to give him.

Thanks.  I quit giving Opie pig ears after years of giving them to him.  I had purchased a big bag of them and when I opened the bag, I thought they smelled a little "off."  I mean they always stink, but I thought I detected something else, but did not trust my instincts.  I gave him one and he got really sick.  I do not know for sure if it was the pig ear, but I didn't want to take the chance.  I tossed the rest away and could never bring myself to ever give him another one.

Just today, I opened a bag of Beggars 'n Chewers dog treats (knuckle bones, pig ears and snouts, ligaments and trachea, etc) for Mattie and detected that same smell that I smelled that long time ago.  I tossed them in the garbage.

Gee, how can you tell when a bag of knuckle bones, pig ears, snouts, ligaments and trachea goes bad? Don't they always smell nasty?

Thanks for the head's up Sister Charon & Gayle!

I used to give pig ears & cow hoofs to my first pup Tori, but decided not to do the same for Skyler & Chloe. Guess I will continue to NOT give them to any future pups...(can't wait for that day to happen)

Thanks for the info...

Cathy
