Okay, am I the only person on the planet that does not think this is funny?  Wait, let me rephrase that.  Are me and Rick the only people on the planet that do not think this is funny?

Sorry to be so crabby.  I saw that look on Tate exactly once and it broke my heart.

Jan, I had a similar reaction when I first saw this video months ago. I thought the dog behaved as if it had been hit. Then I did a little research. I have too much time on my hands (yay unemployment). The dog and its humans were on Good Morning America and explained some things. This dog is unusual. She just taught herself to make that weird face, and she is a tremendous pleaser. Consequently, she knew she had done a no-no and was distressed that she had displeased her people. She's also very intelligent and has a large arsenal of tricks. Maybe her people are also unemployed. Hmmm...

I have gone from wanting to turn in the people for beating their dog to thinking this is weird and a little creepy. But at least I no longer think that the dog is being harmed.

Sammy mostly smiles just like that when he is happy.  However, when he is stressed or upset he will hang his head and smile like that too.   I agree about it hurting your heart to see it, that dog obviously was in the hot seat.

Am I the only one who thinks time outs doesn't work for dogs?  I don't know if I would use it as a training tool, dogs are so in the moment that I can't imagine they would learn from it.

I do use the well if you can't play nice then you can't play right now thing, but only to keep the play from escalating...

I just want to hug Denver, what a sweet dog.

I did not intend to upset anyone. I was attempting to bring some levity to the forum, as there has been alot of loss recently.
Another reason I posted this video is because my first pup Tori would also wag her tail like Denver did when she was guilty of doing something wrong. I never hit her or any of my other pups.
Sorry if I offended anyone.

Cathy,

I don't believe you could ever offend me.  smileylaugh  I think we just love dogs so much that seeing one get in trouble and feel bad makes us feel bad for the puppy.

Of course that is just my view, this didn't bother me other than feeling bad for Denver.  I love smiles.

Good golly no, Cathy! I haven't been here nearly as long as you and Elizabeth, but I will go out on a limb and say there is no reason to apologize for trying to lighten things up. You're right. Too much loss lately. For me personally, I did worry that the dog had been hit because of her over-the-top reaction. But she's just a very smart dog with her own unique way of thinking about her misbehavior. I wish my kids had a conscience half as big as hers!

Oh Cathy, I'm sorry I said anything.  Don't mind me, I'm just in over my head over here right now.  You have a happy memory of Tori when you see this but I have a sad memory of Tate when I see it.  I apologize.

I appreciate your effort, and I always enjoy reading your posts.  Sorry I was a wet blanket.  embarassed

We all have such a different view of things.  I laughed my butt off the first time I saw this, so did my husband and son.  We laughed at this video so much because our Dakota has a habit of tearing into trash anytime he gets the chance.  And when we walk in the house and see trash on the floor he immediately drops his head and wags his tail in that odd way Denver does because he knows he did something wrong.  He was never taught that behavior either.  Punishment is not something we use on our dogs.  And knowing Dakota's self taught reaction it never occured to me that Denver may have been abused.  So, in that spirit, I love this video!!  Her owners have probably done nothing but baby that dog.

I laughed, too, because Tosca does the head down, side-to-side smile with tail thumps, and it always cracks us up when she does. She also does it when she really likes somebody but hasn't seen them in a while. I guess that is why the video made me laugh. I associated it with a funny thing that my girl does, but I guess if you had seen that look in a negative context prior it would definitely color your view.

Yeah, I laughed too. I guess we all bring our prior experiences to our view of this... like anything in life. We had a beagle (our sweet Bailey) who would make a similar funny face when we first came home. It was like she wasn't awake yet and her instinct was to snarl at the "intruders", but she was awake enough to know it was us and would be smiling & tail wagging at the same time. It was such a funny little smiley/snarly face, sort of like the dog in this video. I'd never seen another dog make such a face until I saw this video, so it made me laugh.

And Cathy, yes, it's nice to have some levity on here when we often get so much sad news.

Kisses from Abby to everybody,
Jackie

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Oh, that face! It is so strange. The man's voice doesn't sound aggressive at all, but it is so uncomfortable to watch!

I used to feed a stray dog when we lived in Turkey. I brought her leftovers every morning and she would make the same face as soon as I got out of the car. At first I thought she was baring her teeth aggressively. But she was the sweetest thing and never barked or snarled.

I recently read the book "Inside of a Dog (what dogs see, smell and know)". The author described this face perfectly and said it is a sign of submission. Its a good book, by the way.
