This was posted in the PBT forum by the CHCC technician who is a member there. Their goal is to collect 2000 DNA samples by June 19, the one mile walk into Boston.   Wanted to pass it along.

The CHCC (Canine Hereditary Cancer Consortium) has teamed up with Luke
Robinson and "2 Dogs, 2000 miles" in an effort to collect canine DNA
samples!!!

There is an announcement on their website.

You beat us to posting this! oh-my

We just spoke with the Big Dog yesterday. He's excited about the upcoming Puppy Up! celebrartions, of course, and we promised to help promote the 2000 DNA Samples Campaign before he gets to Boston. So thanks for posting this.

exclamation Everyone please help spread the word! Tweet it, Facebook, whatever ... spread the word, tell your vets!

Anyone attending the Puppy
Up! Festival
at the Boston Common June 19th, can bring their dog to submit a sample at the collection site there in person / dog!

If you can't make it there sign up online to submit a sample from your dog with cancer!

We submitted Holly's sample this winter after someone posted about it here.  Since Holly was getting her blood checked regularly anyway we figured why not?  Our vet was very supportive, and our feeling was that if we could help prevent someone else from hearing that awful C-word... we're hoping every little bit will help.

Holly and Susan

Holly joined the world of tripawds on 12/29/2009. She has a big little sister, Zuzu, who idolizes Holly and tries to make all of her toys into tripawds in Holly's honor. And she's enjoying life one hop at a time!

This is my thought exactly.  I did make a special trip to have the sample collected, but I really felt like it was a small thing we could contribute and maybe help somone in the longrun.  It would be awesome to keep somone later on from hearing an osteosarcoma diagnosis.

I will share this, when I was first contacted about donating, it freaked me out. I simply could not even think about it.  Why the severe reaction?  I have no idea.  Maybe my brain somehow connected it to mortality?  Within a day, I had settled myself and logic again took control and all was well.  I could see what a great opportunity it was for us to give back.

I encourage all of you to consider participating.  No pressure, it is a personal choice.

Donating to the study made me more at ease with the fact Harley had cancer.  It, in some ways, gave me a feeling of peace … even though we have to go through this & we may lose him way too soon, Harley was able to help others in some small way.  I felt very blessed Harley's cancer was one they were studying, and we were able to participate.  I was disappointed UW didn't have any studies going on for Histiocytic Sarcoma (especially when I saw Ohio State and Colorado State did); it just always felt like, if we have to go through this anyway, we would love to help others not have to someday.  I'm beyond thrilled we were given this opportunity!

Amputation on 11/10/09, due to Histiocytic Sarcoma in left elbow. Angel Harley earned his wings on 06/24/10.
