In early February of this year, our 10 year old Greyhound (Sydney) fell out of our bed and broke her leg.  At the ER vet, the doctor looked at the XRays and gave us a diagnosis we never expected.  Osteosarcoma.  I am usually the type who self diagnosis a brain tumor when I have a headache, so I dont know why this possibility never went through my mind.

Long story short, 5 days later she underwent surgery for leg amputation.  She didnt make it through the surgery.  That was on Valentine's Day.  We had had her for 6 years, along with our two other greyhounds (Samba-7 and Paige-7).  It was devastating.  Paige is Sydney's daughter and it was very distressing to see how much she mourned for her.

The same week Sydney died, one of her sons came up for adoption.  My fiance and I thought about it and decided that it wouldnt be a good idea to adopt another dog just because he was her son.

The very same week, a not-even-two-year-old female greyhound named Sugar came up for adoption.  Turns out her great-grandfather is Sydney's father, she looks eerily like Sydney and she has three legs!  And unlike Sydney, whose cancer would eventually spread, Sugar lost her leg through an injury.  She is perfectly healthy now.

Sugar came over to meet us on February 26th.  She had just had her amputation a couple weeks earlier and she couldnt be spayed until mid March.  She came to live with us on March 26th, which ironically was the exact same date we got Sydney, back in 2006.  Isnt life funny?

Thanks for listening to my story–I will be writing in my blog and looking forward to exploring the site and reading other people's stories!
