If you are concerned with being out of the home for too long you could hire a pet sitter for an hour or two if you're concerned that Sammy will get into some kind of trouble. (Add it to the lawsuit) I think most of the pets do fine alone. You could look at leaving Sammy in a room where he can't get into anything.
I'm not sure what action you could take with a pet-cam. It could be interesting though so please let us know how it goes. Purrkins has one for the litter box. Sheesh, no privacy what so ever.
