First, my thanks to all the contributors to this site, the amazing stories and invaluable help.
Oscar is our 10 year old Golden-Rottweiler mix that we’ve had since he was a puppy. He was adorable as a little yellow ball of fluff and is just as adorable now as a 80 pound ball of fluff. He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his left front paw at the beginning of August. Tests have shown no signs of the cancer spreading at this point. We elected to have a partial amputation of his leg and then have a prosthetic made. We are currently Day 1 post op and doing pretty well. That is to say Oscar is doing pretty well while Mom and Dad are exhausted from stress and lack of sleep. Here’s to Day2 and an even better day than today!

) but we are so happy to have you, and hope that we can help make the journey easier.
It is going to be GREAT to watch Oscar adapt to his new prosthetic. Who is doing it for you, and where? I'm nosy! But seriously, we love knowing that more dogs are getting a chance at artificial limbs and are going to be very interested in his progress. We hope you'll start a Tripawds blog so everyone can follow along!
YAY for a good recovery so far. You sound like you have a terrific attitude and that makes ALL the difference. Please let us know if we can do anything to help so you can all sleep better at night OK?

Sending you positive energy--our Fallon really handled this all better than we did--but we've found some equilibrium and are doing OK...your stress and sleep will get better!

We initially thought the tumor was only in one of his toes, so we consulted a specialist to see if clear margins could be obtained; if the toe with the tumor was removed. Unfortunately, the tumor was touching 2 other toes, so we had the decisions to make, full leg or partial. Chest x-ray was clear (no signs that the cancer has spread), so we made the decision to do partial amputation. Trust me it was a tough decision and we consulted multiple doctors and physical therapists. We wanted to make sure we were doing the right thing for Oscar.
It was our visit to PT that spawned the idea of prosthetic. There is a place in Sterling, VA (Animal Ortho Care). We are scheduled to go in 2 weeks for mold/fitting. We are praying that Oscar will adjust to his artificial limb. We will definitely keep everyone posted on how our big adjusts.
