Hey all. My three year old Brittany just had left front leg amputated due to trauma. She hopped the fence and before we could find her someone hit her with their car. I think it has been tougher on me emotionally than her. We are 4 days out and she seems to be doing quite well. The main problem we are having is keeping her calm when we take her out. Today she actually ran around the house and up the back fairs before we could stop her. I bird hunt and she is my best bird dog by far, I hope she gets to hunt again she loves it. Her name is Turner's Christmas Bell and we call her Bell.

I hope you don't mind that I moved your post here- I didn't want your story to get lost in the other thread.
Also- future posts will not require moderation.
I think most if not all of us relate to the fact that amputation is harder on our pups than on us. Dogs just have a way of taking what comes their way and getting on with things- while we fret and worry. We need to be more like them! Around here we call it being more dog.
Sounds like Bell is doing well so far.
You need to check out Jeddediah's posts- he is also a bird dog that lost a front leg to a break. His Dad posts as chaco1. You can see all the posts he started HERE. Jed is back to hunting, I bet Bell will be able to also.

Sorry to hear about your Bells injury. Sounds just like our girl Kayla after her amputation we had more problems keeping her calm than anything else 🙂 It is incrediably hard on us mere humans where as the dogs just seem to take it in thier stride, it doesn't seem to phase them after a while.
Hope her recovery continues to go well. These forums are a brilliant source of info and encouragement espescially all those little questions.

Welcome!! Sounds like Bell is doing great! If she feels like running around that is a good sign. I would still try to keep her as calm as you can though so things heal properly. Good luck with everything and I hope that Bell can eventually go back to doing everything that she loves including being a bird Dog!!

Welcome to the gang, Bell! So sorry you needed to find us but so happy you did. It's hard to keep a Brittany down, but you need to chill out a little and heal. You'll get a little better and stronger each day, and pretty soon you'll be out there working your tail off again. Make sure to post some pictures of yourself so we can see your pretty face. I'll bet you have freckles!

Welcome-- sounds like Bell is doing marvelously, although I'm so sorry about her accident. I bet she'll be back to birding once she fully recovers. Our surgeon told us about several dogs he's performed amputations on that went on to be successful bird dogs, and our own tripawd loved to swim.

Welcome to you and Bell. It is pretty much always harder on us humans to accept this than it is for the dogs. The dogs just get on with it - in the meantime, teaching us a lot about how to deal with adversity!
I also thought of Jeddidiah. I think you'll find his pics/posts very inspiring! Hopefully you will be back to hunting too, Bell!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year.
